David Crawford Byrne
BYRNE, DAVID CRAWFORD, merchant and legislator, was born February 19, 1843 near Blakely, Baldwin County; son of Peter Cornelius and Clarissa K. (Hanes) Byrne, the former a native of Baldwin County, was probate judge, county treasurer and clerk of the circuit court prior to and during the War of Secession; grandson of Thomas Byrne, a native of Baldwin County, who served in the Indian War of 1836, and piloted Gen. Andrew Jackson from New Orleans to Pensacola, and of John Hanes of Coffee County, who served as a Colonel in the War of 1812; great-grandson of Gerald Byrne, who came from. Ireland about 1790, landed at Savannah and moved shortly afterward to Blakely, Baldwin County. He was educated in the schools of Baldwin County. In October, 1861, he enlisted in Co. I., 23rd Alabama infantry regiment, C. S. Army, was appointed third sergeant, promoted second lieutenant in 1863; and later to adjutant; was severely wounded at Port Gibson and Atlanta; paroled at Salisbury, May 1, 1865.
He is a merchant; a notary public and justice of the peace; elected member of the house of representatives from Baldwin County, November 4, 1907. He is a Democrat; and a Methodist.
Married: July 8, 1875, to Florence Van Dorn, daughter of Col. Cade M. and Mary M. (Hall) Godbold (q. v.).
