Notes on Richardson (Dick) Johnson
Individual:
In a taped conversation between Sarah Jane "Candy" (Rider) Johnson
and Ralph Johnson in 1984, Candy has these memories of her husband Walter's
grandfather, Richardson "Dick" Johnson:
"I have a faint remembrance of that old man. I don't ever remember
talking to him because I was always scared of him. He was blind and wore
dark glasses and a big old black hat and used a walking stick. Walter's
people lived at the Mixon place, up above the [Johnson] cemetery where
the Murphy's live now. We use to come to visit Mama's family in Bromley
and I would get Papa to stop there on the way to get some water from the
bored well that belonged to Walter's family. I would pretend that I wanted
water. They had crepe myrtle trees there that were in bloom and I was
always crazy about flowers. I would want a bouquet of those flowers and
Walter's mama [Mary Jane Curry Johnson] would always tell one of the boys
to go up a tree and get me some flowers, and they would. I can remember
him [Walter's grandpa] sitting on that porch. He was a big old man, not
fat, but strong. He was blind and some say he dressed like an Indian.
I think he had about three wives. He married an Indian girl. They said
she was wild and he caught her. That was Walter's grandmother...They said
he hid buttermilk in a jug and drank it like water and he hung it up in
a tree where the Johnson Cemetery is. You know he owned all that land,
from that creek down there nearly back to Bay Minette. That's how all
them Johnson's got there tracts of land, it was left to them by him...They
said he went meet the boat down here for a bale of flour and they made
a mistake and gave him sugar instead. He put it over his shoulders and
walked back to Whitehouse. When he got home he discovered it was sugar,
not flour, so he put it back over his shoulders and took it all the way
back to the boat. They say he was a mighty man and strong."
In the same conversation Ralph Johnson says, "I can't remember if
Papa [Andrew Jackson Johnson] told me this or not, but somebody told me
that Grandpa Dick Johnson was a cow rustler over about Orange, Texas.
The law got after him and he had to run so he came down here to Old Blakeley.
I went to see Howard Henderson and he said he had heard that also.

and the black man shot Piggy and drug him down to the bottom of the branch.
The colored man thought he was dead, but he was not. Piggy died with that
bullet his head. Grandma [Alice] said that Abe had a stallion horse that
he rode. They lived over at the Devil's Backbone. Grandma [Alice] said
that she had a feeling that something was going to happen to Abe this
day. His horse was raid and cutup that she liked to have never got to
him to hand Abe his pistol, but she finally got it to him. She watched
him leave and she had a feeling that she would never see him alive again.
Abe came down to here to Bromley and killed that colored man. The colored
man ran out by him at this house and shot him, and he shot the colored
man. He fell to his knees and died down inside of a tree. Grandma had
one boy by Abe and his name was Albert Johnson. He was kind of retarded.
After Abe died, Grandma [Alice] married the Hurley and had children by
him."

Bloody Deed of a Negro in Baldwin County
The particulars reach us Wednesday of a most horrible tragedy that has
occurred in Baldwin county, near Sibley's mills. Mr. Joel JOHNSON, a well-known
citizen of the neighborhood, was riding quietly along the public road,
last Saturday, when he was shot from behind a tree by a Negro. The weapon
used was a pistol, and the first struck Mr. JOHNSON in the head, stunning
him, and causing him to fall from his horse. While on the ground the assassin
shot him twice again, in the wrist and side and then dragged him two or
three hundred yards, and put him a branch, or pond thinking him dead.
The Negro mounted his victim's horse, and rode off to a party in the neighborhood.
During the night, Mr. JOHNSON, revived by the night air, came to, and
dragged himself home, a distance of about half a mile. He recollected
nothing on him at first, but later in the day he recalled something about
it, and told his brother, Abe JOHNSON. This, together with the fact of
the negro having been seen on Mr. Joel JOHNSON's horse, led Mr. Abe JOHNSON,
a deputy sheriff, to determine to arrest him. He found the Negro at Jim
Malone's house Monday. As he made the arrest the Negro drew his pistol,
but, in getting it out of his pocket, dropped it. Abe JOHNSON then shot
him, whereupon the Negro pick up his pistol and shot Abe JOHNSON through
the breast and then ran. Mr. JOHNSON son ran a little way after him and
fired at him, but the negro ran on. Mr. JOHNSON then fell, and died in
about fifteen minutes. A crowd soon collected and started in search of
the negro. They found him about 4 o'clock that afternoon, lying dead,
shot through the breast and wrist. He had ran about half a mile down the
creek, and fell in the edge of the swamp. The Negro did not live in the
neighborhood, but had come from near Bay Minette, Mr. Joel JOHNSON has
been brought to the Port Hospital for treatment.

He was found dead by his neighbor in his field with his plows and donkey
They say the reason Monroe and his son, Spencer Johnson, died was because of the women that lived with Monroe poisoned them both. Monroe's son Andrew Jackson "Jack" Johnson and Monroe's half brother Thomas Edward "Eddie" Johnson believed that they both died of heart attacks. When they where sitting up with Monroe's body, Spencer had picked up his daughter to see her grandfather's body. Right then Spencer fell dead on his father's body. Thomas Edward's grandson, Howard Henderson, said that Monroe had a heart attack while plowing a field. Monroe's neighbor, George Washington Durant, saw the donkey wondering around and found Monroe dead in the field.
Monroe Johnson lived in Crossroads in Naden Johnson's old house. It is
a old white house that is set off Highway 39.A.

Notes on Mary Catherine Johnson
The following is a little story that was told to me by Judy (Burgett)
Davis. Judy's mother was Fronie (Brown) Davis, a granddaughter of Catherine
(Johnson) Quinley:
MAMA'S FIRST MEMORIES OF HER GRANDMA CATHERINE -
Mama said, after she got a little older, her mother [Delia Quinley Brown] would trust her to go a short way through a trail to her grandmother's house. Her grandmother would always have plenty of homemade butter and good old baked sweet potatoes. The biscuits were made from cow's milk and the jam from her own ripe berries from her garden. She said it was hard to keep away from her grandma's house. Mother said she would like to help her with her chores in the evenings, feeding the pigs and chickens and putting the cows in their pen. They would build a bonfire to keep the files and mosquitoes from biting them. Mother said on Sundays her grandparents would have a big watermelon cutting. Everyone would bring their children. While her father was showing everyone around the farm, the children would climb into the trees and swing. Afterwards they would have a ice cream supper for everyone
One day while Mama was running around the house, there sat a puppy on some feed sacks. It ran after her, when it thought she was going to her grandmother. She said the only thing that saved her was her grandmother wrapping her long dress around her. From then own she didn't like going to her grandma's alone
-As told by Fronie (Brown) Davis
and remembered by Judy (Davis) Burgett
Judy remembers when she would go visit her grandmother, Delia (Quinley) Brown that there was acros grom her grandmother home a old foundation of a house and wash tubs. This was the Old Quinley Homestead where Catherine lived.
Emma (Duck) Trawick, on 21 July 2004, said she only had one clear memory of her grandmother, Catherine (Johnson) Quinley. She said that her parents and the children had just moved from Brady to Crossroads and her grandmother walked through the woods all the way from White House Fork to come visit them. Catherine had bought her a little kitten, which she carried in a old burlap potato sack.
Mary Catherine was a daughter of Richardson "Dick" Johnson and
Malinday J. Sorrels. She married Thomas Archie "Tom" Quinley.
Their children were John Wesley (Wes), Catherine Fordonia, William D.
(Will), Elvie>, Francis Marion (Frank), Leroy, Delia AnnBrenard (Brenon),
Robert, Andrew Jackson, and Evie Lena Quinley.
Catherine was a victim of the influenza/pneumonia epidemic of the 1920s.
She died of pneumonia along with numerous others in her family.
