Story of Murders Doubted by Sheriff

Bay Minette, Ala, Sept.11. (AP) - Sheriff Cartis Erwin, Baldwin County, declared today he believed statements by Mrs. Eloise Torlan at Cincinnati last night that two Helton brothers were killed several months ago during a hijacking war in the South were untrue.

Mrs. Torlan, arrested last night in the Ohio city on a charge of drunkenness told police her companion, William Hendricks, alia Fontaine, was wanted in the South for the slaying.

Sheriff Erwin said the Hendricks and Helton families here had engaged in several altercations but doubted the account of the double slaying.

Mrs Torlan, formerly Miss Eloise Corsby, of Foley, Ala., said she left her husband, Dr. John Torlan, a naval officer, and ran away with Hendricks, four weeks ago.
