Red Mountain Iron Mine in Birmingham, Ala.

Hematite, an oxide of iron, which is also known as "red iron ore" was designated as the State Mineral by Alabama Legislature in 1967.  Iron ore mining occurred for many years in the Red Mountain formation of Alabama along the entire length of the mountain which passes through Bibb, Blount, DeKalb, Cherokee, Etowah, Jefferson, St. Clair and Tuscaloosa counties.
