 John Ovatt and Mary Ovatt
JOHN OVATT
(Ovat) – son of Mike Ovatt,
was born in Austria (possibly Czechoslovakia or Slovakia)
on October 25,
1872. He immigrated to
America and became a
resident of Warrior,
Alabama
sometime between 1897 and
1905. He worked as a coal miner until 1929. His married life more than likely began in his home
country and he was wed to Mary (Jemer/Gemer/Gamer) Ovatt. From this union of John and his wife, Mary the following children
were born: Mike Ovatt born 1901 probably in Austria, Annie Ovatt born August 9, 1906 in Warrior,
Alabama, George Andrew Ovatt born January 7, 1909 in Warrior, Alabama,
Mary Helen Ovatt born September 22, 1914 in Republic, Alabama and Susie M.
Ovatt born June 17, 1917 in Republic, Alabama.
Mike Ovatt, possibly named
after his grandfather, married Ella Moody in Kentucky where he
made his home and died March 30, 1936 from a kidney problem. Annie Ovatt married Willie (Bill)
Leonard Stover and died February 25, 1988 in Warrior, Alabama. Annie Ovatt Stover is buried at the
Watts
Union Cemetery. George Andrew Ovatt married Trixie
Mary Lowe, also the sister of Willie Leonard Stover, on August 7, 1930 in
Warrior, Alabama and died at the age of
95 on February 17, 1973 in Warrior, Alabama. George is also buried at the
Watts
Union Cemetery. Mary Helen Ovatt married a Mr.
Bagwell and adopted a daughter named Linda. Susie M. Ovatt married Marshall S.
Zornes and later married Max Beck.
Not much is known about the two youngest siblings.
John
Ovatt went to his final resting place on January 17, 1936 in Warrior,
Alabama and is buried in Brookside, Alabama at St. Michael’s Catholic Church
Cemetery. His wife Mary followed on March 14, 1940 in the same place and is
also buried in Brookside, Alabama at St. Michael’s Cemetery.
