Written in small print:  There were 32 deaths in 2nd Alabama Hospital prior to this record.  H. B.

 

EFFECTS OF PATIENTS WHO HAVE DIED IN 2ND ALA. HOSPITAL SINCE 1ST OF JAN 1862

 

1.  Jan. 14th  - JOHN A. CROSBY

                2 blankets, 1 vest, 1 scarf, 1 coat, 1 pr pants, 13 pr socks, 1 hat, 1 cap, 10 envelopes, 1 pocket book, 1 handkerchief, 1 pair shoes, blk in wash. The rest in knapsack.  H. J. Schariff, W. M.

 

2.  Jan. 17th MCKINDRIE H. BARNES – 11th. Reg. Co. E., Capt. R. J. Hitchen

                3 blankets, 1 pr shoes, 1 pr pants, 1 overcoat, 2 shirts – H. J. Schariff,

 

3.  Jan. 21stJAMES M. SMITH –

                2 blankets, 1 quilt, 1 pair pants, 1 pair drawers, 2 shirts, 1 vest, 1 pr socks, 1 pr shoes, 1 cap, 1 overcoat

                Sent home with the corpse.  H. J. Schariff

 

4.  Jan. 21st J. B. BULLS

                3 shirts, 1 hkf , 2 pr socks, 1 pr boots, 1 overcoat, 3 blankets, lot of tobacco, 1 small memorandum book, carpet bag, 1 finger ring, cash 14 dollars.

                Effects delivered to ________ March 18, 1862.  H. J. Schariff, W. M.

 

5.  Feb. 2ndM. M. MAYER, Jeff Davis Artillery

                7 shirts, 4 pr drawers, 1 pr pants, 1 cap, 2 pr socks

 

6.  Feb. 3rd DANIEL SEARY, A native of County Cork Ireland, and a member of Company K 4th Ala. Regt. Died with disease of the hart (sic).  He requested of the surgeons and officers of the hospital to have a decent burial in the Catholic burial ground, the expense of which to be paid for from his effects, also to have a headstone to mark his resting place with his name and nativity ([marked through]engraved thereon ) and his request that the residue of his effects after paying the funeral expenses should revert to the Alabama Hospital for the benefit of the soldiers of Alabama engraved thereon.  And to secure the fulfillment of his request he signed and caused to be delivered to Mj. A. H. Hopkins the Power of Attorney that he should be able to collect the pay due him from the Confederate states of America.  He was engaged in the Battle of Manassas July 21st, 1861 and on his death bed regretted that he was not killed in battle.  H. 7 (marked through)  Feb 4thJOSIAH JONES – A discharged soldier of the 13th Ala. Regt. left the Hospital for Alabama and being destitute of blankets, a blanket was given him with a request – that upon his arrival at home he would give it to some soldier that was destitute.  H. J. Shariff, W. M.

 

7 – Feb. 4 - G. A. DEWBERRY of Co. G., 14th Reg. died leaving the following effects, viz: 

                3 blankets, 1 package envelopes, 1 lot paper, 1 pin and needle case, 2 pr pants, 2 pr socks, 3 shirts, 1 pr drawers, 1 overcoat, 1 pr shoes, and $4.6/00 (sic) in money.  H. J. Shariff, W. M.

8.  Feb 1 (?) – J. P. THROWER – 14th Reg. Co.,

                Effects delivered to his brothers.  Knapsacks and effects sent home with the corpse Feb. 8th.  H. J. Shariff, W. M.

 

9.  Feb. 12 – ROBERT MOSELEY died leaving the following effects, viz: 

                1 lot of paper, 1 pair of gloves, 4 shirts, 2 pair drawers, 2 comforts, 2 pr socks, 2 pr pants, 3 blankets, $10 in money.  H. J. Shariff, W. M.

 

(written sideways beside his name) Sent home to his parents by request.

 

10.  Feb. 28 – Lt. A. U. PATTERSON – 15th Reg. Co. E entered the Hospital on the ___ of ____ he was returning to Alabama on sick leave of absence but being too sick to travel stopped to rest for a few days.  After remaining a few days it was evidently apparent that he was much worse.  When on the 20th Feb. he was attacked with Erysipeles which terminated in death on the 28th.  He seemed to be conscious of his apr – aching end and had sent for his partner in business Mr. E. BARNES to come after him on his remains.  He requested that a metallic burial case might be procured for his remains and that his internment should be deferred if possible until the arrival of his partner.  But from the nature of the disease of which he died, his request in this particular case was not complied with.  A metallic coffin was procured for the sum of $100, $65 of which was paid out of the funds of the deceased.

                The residue of his cash amounting to $29 together with his trunk and other effects were delivered to his partners in business, Mr. E. BARNES on the 6th of March 1862.  H. J. Shariff

DEATHS

 

NOAH SMITH – Private 5th Ala. Co. I., died in the 3rd Ala. Hospital on May 25, 1862 of _____, leaving as effects one suit of clothes.

 

L. BOWTWELL – Private 5th Ala. Regt. Co. I died in the 3rd Ala. Hospital on May 27, 1862 of ____, leaving as effects 1 knap, 2 blankets, and clothing.

 

T. R. EDWARDS – Corp 13th Ala. Regt. Co. C died in the 3rd Ala. Hospital on May 31, 1862 of ____ leaving as effects pkt book containing $5.00, 2 blankets, 1 shall & pr saddle bags with clothing – delivered to his brother.

 

W. T. MAULDEN – Private 24th Ga. Co. F died in 3rd Ala. Hospital on May 22, 1862 of ____ leaving as effects _______

 

H. MOORING – 2 Fla. Co. D died in 3rd Ala. Hospital on the 4th day of June 1862 leaving as effects $2.00 in money and a due bill for $5.00 in possession of EDWARDS (marked through: the drug store man) vs.

Leut. G. R. GILREATH – 37th N. C. Co. F. died in 3rd Ala. Hosp. May 31st, 1862, whose effects were delivered to his brother – vs.

 

F. A. SADDLER – private 5th La. Regt Co. E. died in 3rd Ala. Hosp. June 1st 1862 leaving as effects suit clothes, blanket.  Vs

 

J. SANDERSON - 4th N. C. Co. D died in 3rd Ala. Hospital on the 3rd day of June, 1862 leaving as effects clothes. vs
