FLORENCE HIGH SCHOOL

The old Colonel John Trumbull Burtwell home on Pine Street was converted into the Florence High School in 1914. This antebellum two-story frame house had a double=deck front porch at the entrance with four columns on each level. The Burtwell home was the scene of a celebrated wartime wedding when Anna America Burtwll was married to Confederate Major Eugene Louis Frederick de Freudenreich Falconnet of royal descent from Switzerland. The principal of this first high school was H.B. Norton. This make shift facility in an elegant old home served the town until 1916, just prior to the opening of the first Coffee High School in 1917.
