1897, April 29 - The Marion County
News
In this issue of The News will be found a tribute to
the memory of THOMAS B. NESMITH, who was the first worshipful master
of Pikeville (now Hamilton) Lodge No. 344, A. F. & A. M. This lodge was organized in
June 1868, under a dispensation granted by the Grand Lodge of the
State of Alabama upon the petition
of:
THOMAS B. NESMITH,
JAMES M. HALL,
MILUS REA,
JESSE POPE,
URIAH WILSON,
ROBERT L. CLARK,
ALBERT J. HAMILTON,
THOMAS WILSON,
WILLIAM J. CLARK,
and
ALLEN HALEY.
THOMAS B. NESMITH
was appointed worshipful master, JAMES M. HALL, senior warden
and MILUS REA, junior warden under the dispensation, and ALBERT J.
HAMILTON was elected the first secretary of the lodge. At this writing we are
informed that only two of the above petitioners are now living –
ALBERT J. HAMILTON and URIAH WILSON. So of the ten brethern who
petitioned for the lodge only two survive their beloved first
worshipful master. Eight of the ten petitioners have been
transplanted from the lodge below to the Supreme Lodge
above.
