Editor Herald:
I thought as we could not see any dots from our flourishing little town Eldridge,
in your valuable paper it would be nothing amiss in me to send you a few.
We are situated on the K. and B. R. R. on the Boiler road, about twenty-eight
miles from your town where your valuable little paper is published.
We are building up rapidly several business houses have gone up and several
dwellings on the way, and a great many lots have been sold recently, and
bills layed in to Messrs. GALAHA, HANEY and TESNEY steam mill men for lumber
to build more. Mr. JOHN C. TERRELL, their sawyer, is away at this time on
a collecting tour, when he returns woe be unto the pine logs; he will saw
them all to pieces. Mr. R. M. SHURLEY, their engineer, has been absent some
ten days putting up engine and saw machinery for T. C. KELLY and Bros. at
Carbon Hill. He returned home on last Saturday, we welcome the old Gentleman
back in our midst for he knows precisely how to handle an engine, or any
other machinery that comes in this way.
Mr. THOROUGHGOOD commenced opening up his rock quarry at this place today,
he will work about one hundred hands and use steam machinery for drilling
and dressing rock.
Mr. JAS. TIPPER has his fine two story dwelling about completed Mr. TIPPER
is a man of taste.
Mr. JOHN GALAHER and THOMAS LATHUM are building a fine stone chimney to Mr.
SHURLEY'S house.
Mr. BUD TESNEY attended the Atlanta exposition, and returned home with chills
and fever, he says pick-pockets were numerous in Atlanta.
Capt. HARRIS and lady and Capt. JENKES left for Birmingham on last evenings
train. We hope for them a speedy return.

Eldridge, Ala., Feb. 5, 1888
Mr. Editor:
It has been some time since I have written anything for the Herald, and Eldridge
has improved so rapidly that I hardly know where to commence. Eldridge has
built up and is now one of the "real nice little towns" of seven stores,
two hotels, church and school house, Masonic Hall, depot and section houses.
The names of the firms doing business here are as follows: KELLEY & KELLEY,
HANEY & WILLIAMS, BAGWELL & Co., WILBURN, and his accomplished lady
have a fine stock of goods, KELLY & Sons, LANE Bros., cousin JOSH, the
fox hunter, is a resident of this place. THOROUGHGOOD has a store and rock
quarry here and is shipping rock by the car load. GALLAHER & Son have
a fine saw and grist mill and plainer, which they are running almost constantly
and still notable to meet the demand.
Dr. SHURLEY and LARK GALLAHER have been on a trip up in Marion, near Allen's
Factory. JOHN W. TIPPER, of Trinity, is in town today.
Mr. MORGAN PEARCE of Texas, Ala. is in town this week.
Mr. W. J. BAUGHN, of this place, was breaking a young yoke of oxen recently.
To prevent them from running the yoke he tied their tails together, and when
he took the yoke off a few days latter he forgot to release their tails,
hence the two beasts became tired of each other and one of them starting
in a direction contrary to the other was forced to sacrifice his tail, which
he did and the big one now carries the caudle appendage for both.
TOM LATHEM, who occupies the position of watchman at the R. R. cut near this
place, flagged down a train and the engineer appearing asked him what was
the matter. "I gonney" said Tom, "I thought she war running too darned fast."
Poor Tom, it is pretty safe to say that he never got any pay for the Bell
sheep.
The MUSGROVE Bros. of Jasper will open a coal mine near this place soon.
Some of the boys were taking on a little too much "red liquor" here yesterday.
So much for prohibition.
With many good wishes for the Herald I am.

ELDRIDGE WHISPERINGS
Editor Herald:
The sound of the saw and hammer is heard in our town quite frequently.
The first bale of cotton of this season sold in Eldridge for 10 cents, and
was bought by H. B. LANE.
The Farmer's Alliance organized a lodge at this place recently, and seems
to mean business.
Prof. FRANCIS who has been teaching at this place is one a visit to relatives
and friends at Shannon, Miss.
Miss MATTIE KELLY is assistant post master at this place and gives universal
satisfaction.
The gay and festive drummer is to be seen on our streets almost daily.
For fear of that ever hungry waste basket I will close.
