My name is Sandra Davis, and as your Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Alaska host, I try to post as much data online as possible in order to make it freely available to all. | Matanuska-Susitna Borough
(often referred to as the Mat-Su Borough) is located in the state of
Alaska with its borough seat located at Palmer and the largest city
being Wasilla. The Mat-Su Borough is so designated because it contains
the entire Matanuska and Susitna Rivers. These rivers empty into Cook
Inlet which is the southern border of the Mat-Su Borough. The Mat-Su
Valley was originally inhabited by Athabaskan Indians and was explored
by Russians in 1818. In 1880 a trading station was built in Palmer and
the area was settled by gold miners in 1913. Wasilla was originally
inhabited by the Dena'ina Indians and the city
began when the Alaska Railroad was constructed in 1917. In 1935, as
part of the New Deal, 200 families from the Midwest traveled to Alaska
and started the Matanuska Valley Colony. |
