Hollis "Max" Newell
Longtime Anchorage and Big Lake resident Hollis M. "Max" Newell, 86,
died Jan. 8 at the Palmer Pioneer Home. Services for Mr. Newell will be
held at 1 p.m. Thursday, at Kehl's Forest Lawn Memorial Chapel in
Anchorage. Father Thomas Power of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church
in Big Lake will officiate.
Born Dec. 30, 1902, in Morenci, Mich., he moved to Alaska in the summer
of 1947 with two of his children. They drove the Alaska Highway,
pulling a mobile home. It took six weeks and 26 flat tires. They
homesteaded in the Spenard area. Mr. Newell went to work at Elmendorf
Air Force Base as a civilian accountant|auditor. In 1950, he
established the Mountain View Service Station. The original building is
still stands as a Renners Service Station. In the 1950s, he and his son
Jerry built one of the first apartment complexes with a mobile home
court called Mountain View Mobile Home Court and Camper Park. In the
1960s, he built numerous homes in the Turnagain area, and married his
second wife, Delia.
After retiring from business, Mr. Newell moved his house from Spenard
to the shores of Big Lake. Family members say he spent a great deal of
time fishing, even in rain and snow. He owned two greenhouses, was fond
of growing strawberries, and had a 11|2acre garden. He taught his
grandchildren to fish and swim. He had been a resident of the
Pioneer Home in Palmer since 1986.
Mr. Newell leaves his wife, Delia, of Big Lake; his sons, Jerry, of
Anchorage, and Danny, of Big Lake; his daughters, Betty Kirk and Sue
Renner, both of Anchorage; two brothers, Carl, of Dallas, and Donald,
of Detroit; his sister, Alice Pattie, of Chicago; eight grandchildren
and nine greatgrandchildren. Interment will be at Angelus Memorial Park
in Anchorage.
