Items from Cottonwood (News Article)
Cottonwood, Nov. 18. (Editor of the
Journal-Miner.) As all the other little settlements hare been seen and
heard, it is time that Cottonwood should have a little voice and have
her say once in a while, for after all she with her sister settlements,
Middle Verde and Camp Verde, cast the deciding vote for sheriff thus
proving though "little that she and they are mighty."
Cottonwoods are to be found in many
places in our county, but "our Cottonwood" as undoubtedly you, but
perhaps not all your readers know, is a quiet little embryo town on
Upper Verde, about six miles from Jerome. The view of Jerome from here
is a beautiful one, both by day and by night. During the day the houses
stand out clear and distinct from their perches on the mountain sides
with the columns of smoke from the smelter ever floating upward, while
by night the lights look like twinkling stars, with grand flashes of
light between, from the emptying of the slag, thus forming one grand
illumination of red lights, as if celebrating their own work. This is
one the "Cottonwoods" have constantly before them.
We have a school which is, classified
as first grade. It is under the direction of Miss Lincoln. The average
attendance of pupils is from twenty five to thirty.
The church and Sunday school is also
a permanent institution with us. The Sunday school is at present under
the leadership of Miss Addie Watts, an evangelist and missionary of
considerable note. The Rev. Robert Wright, of Camp Verde comes up
frequently and preaches for us. The Rev. G. W. Taylor, of Prescott,
has just closed a series of
successful revival meetings. His lectures were very interesting being
illustrated by means of the stereopticon and grammaphone.
Friday noon a very pretty and solemn
sight was witnessed on the banks of the Verde river; the baptism by
immersion of the converts.
The " Verdieites" are all in a state
of exultation on account of the steady down pour of rain which
commenced Friday night, and is still "at it."

Please take note of the marriage of Edward Bochat and Eva Balston at
the Middle Verde school house on the evening of the 9th inst., Rev.
R.H. Windes officiating. the Rev. Windes preached a short sermon at 8
o'clock, and the bride and groom came in at 8.30. the house was
beautifully decorated, and the whole affair reflected great credit on
the neighborhood. We like to see such weddings, they seem unselfish.
after the ceremony, the congratulations of the large crown were very
profuse, and all went home happy.
