Fort Mohave Cemetery

Mohave Valley


The first troops arrived at Fort Mojave in April of 1859, By May of 1891, Fort Mojave was abandoned because of the Civil War and was regarrisoned in May 1863. The soldiers were the California Volunteers.
Fort Mojave was discontinued as a military post of September 29, 1896, and the buildings were turned over to the Indian Service for the establishment of a school for native children. One final set of a military nature was performed in May, 1892 when Lt. Charles Crawford with a detachment of soldiers, received some 60 remains of soldiers and civilians from the cemetery at Fort Mojave. These remains boxed and properly labeled, were shipped to the National Cemetery at San Francisco for reburial. The Fort Mojave Indian School was closed in 1934. the buildings stood empty until 1942 when they were dismantled and removed from the site. There are 16 unmarked graves still in the cemetery
(supposed to be Christian Indians).
