The first troops arrived at Fort Mojave in April of
1859, By May of 1891, Fort Mojave was abandoned
because of the Civil War and was regarrisoned in May 1863. The soldiers
were the California Volunteers.
Fort Mojave was discontinued as a military post of
September 29, 1896, and the buildings were
turned over to the Indian Service for the establishment of a school for
native children. One final set of a military
nature was performed in May, 1892 when Lt. Charles Crawford with a
detachment of soldiers, received some 60 remains
of soldiers and civilians from the cemetery at Fort Mojave. These
remains boxed and properly labeled, were shipped
to the National Cemetery at San Francisco for reburial. The Fort Mojave
Indian School was closed in 1934. the buildings
stood empty until 1942 when they were dismantled and removed from the
site. There are 16 unmarked graves still
in the cemetery
(supposed to be Christian Indians).
The information about Fort Mohave was taken from the
book, Mohave County Sketches of Early days,
by Roman Malach, Mohave County Historian.
