ARIZONA TRAILS MOHAVE COUNTY

Old Kingman Cemetery

Old timers were telling about the tragedies as the one during the 4th of July in the early 1900s. A family the name of Dryden lived across from where now the Safeway store is located. The parents were participating in the events of the celebration and the house was locked their two boys about 10 and 12 years old got into the house through the window. They wanted to start a fire with what they thought was kerosene. It was gasoline. They ran from the house up Beale Street in flames and were screaming. They were caught and fire extinguished, but both died. Oil and flour were used over their whole bodies as remedies.  Life in Kingman was simple, and the people worked, and in the course of their life they came to their end and were placed for rest in the old cemetery, forgotten, but located in the area of the present school complex. Mrs. Fanny Lovin Woodward has an old map of the cemetery.
From that map many grave names were copied and presented here, honoring the memory of the early residents of Kingman.
Almost 280 names were listed and only some 15 women, On some graves was only family name. A dozen or so graves were marked just Baby. A few family names were rather well known in Mohave County,  such as Gaddis, Kuencer, Boner, Musser or Tarr. One grave marker had to catch the eye, Woman was the "Hill Prostitute. It is understood that not all the names were of the residents of Kingman, but brought for the burial from other places, as this marker indicated,
Bones found near the Jumbo mine. The remains of many graves were reinterned on the Mountain View Cemetery, hence their names do not appear on the above list. The list below of the grave names on the old cemetery in Kingman could be the only documentary evidence for the future reference.
