HALTOM, a retired bookkeeper and former deputy clerk in
Ashley County, Ark., died Tuesday at a Grapevine hospital. She was 86.
Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today in Bethesda Cemetery in
Camden, Ark.
Lucas Funeral Home in Grapevine is in charge of local arrangements.
Mrs. Haltom was born in Warren, Ark., and lived in Grapevine for more
than a year. She was a former resident of Sheridan, Ark. She
was
a member of Landmark Baptist Church in Sheridan.

MRS.
CLARESSA ANN BARKER HARTLEY, 45, of Hamburg died Thursday,
January 27, 2000, at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine
Bluff. A native of East St. Louis, IL, and a Hamburg resident for the
past 25 years, she attended the Eden Baptist Church and was retired
from the Hamburg Shirt Factory. She was preceded in death by a
daughter, Patricia Ann Smart, and a brother, Charley G. Barker.
Survivors include a son, Kevin Lee Hartley; a daughter, Kendra Marie
Hartley, both of Fountain Hill; her parents, Charley and Wanda Hicks
Barker of Hamburg; two brothers, Gary D. and Phillip S. Barker of
Collinsville, IL; two sisters, Kathy Norrell and Rhonda Sawyer of
Hamburg; two grandchildren, Destiny Neshea Hartley and Adam Tyler
Choate; 21 nieces and nephews and ten great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services were planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, in the
chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg with Revs. Mike Titsworth and
Charles Pullin officiating. Pallbearers were to be Shane Hartley, Hank
and Jimmy Don Norrell, Brad Sawyer, Shane Sivils and Shane Rickman.
Burial was to follow services at the Eden Cemetery.

HAZEL
EUJENIOR HAYES, 89, of Crossett died Thursday, Feb. 10,
2000, at the Crossett Leisure Lodge. She was born on Nov. 27, 1910, to
Rufus and Mary Glover Rice in Bradley County. Mrs. Hayes was a
homemaker and a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church. She was
preceded in death by a grandson, Terry Hines, and a great-grandson,
Dakota Hines.
Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Luther Hayes of Crossett;
two sons, Sammie Joe Hayes of Warren and Rex Hayes of Branson, MO; one
daughter, Denver Jeffers of Crossett; 10 grandchildren, and 15
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 13, in the Jones Funeral
Home chapel in Crossett with the Revs. Wayman Mann and John Reed
officiating. Pallbearers were Marty, Greg, and Bruce Hayes and Dennis,
Tony and Donnie Hines. Honorary pallbearers were Mitchell Greeenwood,
Lavern Rice, Bill Watson, Robert Nichols, Dale Taylor, Otis Brady,
Tency Schilders, John C., Bobby, Danny and Carl Jeffers and Sean
Grisham. Burial followed services at Pinewood Memorial Park.

AMON
MORRIS HERRINGTON, 78, of Crossett died Tuesday, February
1, 2000, at his home. Born July 22, 1921, in Crossett to Abner Morris
and Fannie Barnett Herrington, he was a painter and was preceded in
death by his parents and three brothers, Curtis, Robert and Roy
Herrington.
Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline Herrington; a son, Morris
Herrington and wife Tina; three brothers, Edward and Billy Joe
Herrington, all of Crossett, and Gerald Herrington of Monroe, LA; seven
sisters, Estelle Chandler, Essie Fay Meyer and Frances Blissett of
Crossett, Rose Lee White and Reathea Laws of Little Rock, Jessie Mae
Harvey of Bogalusa, LA, and Sybil Standridge of Clinton; two
grandchildren, Whitney and Courtney Herrington of Crossett; and 44
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 3, at Jarvis Chapel
Baptist Church with Gayle Riles officiating. Pallbearers were Keith,
James, Kevin, Robbie, Joey and Harry Harrington and Ronald Dean
Forrest. Honorary pallbearers were Hayden and Johnny Hennington, Sonny
and Ronnie Anthony and Jeff Smith. Burial followed services at
Crossroads Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.

HAMBURG, ARK--
MRS. CAROLYN L. HILL, 69, of Hamburg died Monday, January 3, 2000, at the Ashley
County Medical Center. A native and life-long resident of Hamburg and Ashley
County, she was retired from the Hamburg school lunchroom and was a member of
the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a grandson,
Billy Hill, Jr., in 1995; her parents, Clifton and Mary Lou Stovall Strickland;
a half-brother, Johnny Strickland; and a half-sister, Patty
Shelton.
Survivors include her husband, Billy B. Hill; two sons, Billy W.
"Butch" Hill and wife Phyllis and James R. "Buddy" Hill and wife Tammy; a
daughter, Nelda Wells and husband Thomas, all of Hamburg; a sister, Doris
Mahoney of Las Vegas, NV; seven grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday,
January 4, in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home in Hamburg with Revs. Lawrence
Amos and Roy Craig officiating. Pallbearers were to be Shannon and Seth Hill,
Shane Wells, Jason Akers, Tim Endlsey and Andy Stewart. Honorary pallbearers
were to be Bobby Lloyd, Lamar McCain, Benny Summitt, Ronnie McDougald, Harold
McKiever, Blaine Kilcrease, Buddy Reeves and Forrest Rice. Burial will

MRS.
CARRIE (MONER) COURSON HILL, 86, of Hamburg died Tuesday,
March 14, 2000, at the North Monroe Hospital in Monroe, LA. Mrs. Hill
was a native of Ashley County and a resident of Hamburg for most of her
life. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hamburg and a
homemaker. She is preceded in death by her husband, Norwood N. Hill in
1977; a grandson, Phillip N. Laskey in 1988; her parents, Bunyan A.
& Bertha Richards Courson; two brothers, B.A. Courson Jr. and
Harry Courson and a sister, Jane Modell Bunn.
She is survived by a son, William A. Hill and his wife, Nancy of Turtle
Lake, WI; twin daughters, Linda Harville and Winda Laskey and her
husband, Ray, all of Hamburg; a foster son, Jimmy Lloyd of Dierks; a
brother, Richard Courson of Hamburg; four sisters, Nell Davis of
Hamburg, Virginia Riley of Little Rock, Peggy Echols & Mary
Sivils, both of Monticello; four grandchildren, Karen Hill Bruckner,
Russell R. Harville, Vicki Laskey Pennington and Dee Dee Harville
Smith, and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m., Thursday, March 16, at the First
Baptist Church of Hamburg with Rev. Klois Hargis officiating.
Pallbearers were Don & Bobby Davis, Jeff Grice, John, Wayne
& Paul Courson and Rick Woods. Interment was at the Pinewood
Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg.

Eudora, AR--
HARRY
BUFORD HILL, 76, of Eudora died Monday, January 24, 2000,
at the Baptist Medical Center. Born in Dry Bayou on December 23, 1923,
to the late Henry and Anna Bell Hill, he was an U. S. Navy veteran of
the Pacific Campaign during World War II, a retired farmer and member
of the New Hope Baptist Church where he was a men's Sunday School class
teacher for 30 years. He was also a member of the Scottish Rites of
Freemasonry, AF&AM #13 of Portland, the Association of Quorum
Courts, and Delta Chapter 571 of the Order of Eastern Star. He was
preceded in death by three brothers, Turner Butler Hill, Albert Gilbert
"Dub" Hill and Leroy Hill; and three sisters, Viola Ferrell, Harvie
Williamson and Essie Mays.
Survivors are his wife, Mary Louise Hill; two sons, Johnny Allen of
Bridge City, TX, and Dennis Allen of Peterborough, NH; a sister, Gladys
Blackwell of Hamburg; six grandchildren, Melissa Taylor of Port Arthur,
TX, Brandy Phillips of Bridge City, Tina Allen of Houston, TX, Johnny
Allen, Jr, of Bridge City, Shawn Allen of Atlanta, GA, and Shera Allen
Brown of Mitford, NH; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, in the New Hope
Baptist Church with Rev. Sanders Brooks officiating. Pallbearers were
Lonnie Knight, Woody West, Tom Brady, Tommy Poole, Kenny Clark and

HAZEL AGNES HILL,
93, of Crossett died Wednesday, January 19, 2000, at the Ashley County
Medical Center. Born October 1, 1906, in Hamburg to Jesse and Amzie
Hill, she was a graduate of Arkansas State Teachers College (University
of Central Arkansas) and Peabody College (Vanderbilt University). She
taught for many years and retired as the Crossett High School librarian
in 1971. Ms. Hill was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crossett
where she was a church librarian and taught adult Sunday School
classes. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother,
Carlton Hill.
Survivors include three sisters, Bayda Lawrence of Portland and Annie
Jo Farrar and Mildred Dew of Crossett and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 22, in the First
Baptist Church of Crossett with Dr. David Newberry officiating.
Pallbearers were Carlton Lawrence, Bill Dew, Earl Farrar, Neal Farrar,
Dr. Bob Lawrence, Tommy Hooks, Pat Cook and Tommy Tucker. Burial

MRS. LENORA CUNNINGHAM HOLLIS, 85, of Hamburg died Friday, December 31, 1999, at
the Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello. Mrs. Hollis was a native and life-long
resident of Ashley County and a life-long member of the Zion United Methodist
Church. She retired from the Georgia-Pacific plywood mill. Mrs. Hollis was
preceded in death by her husbands, Henry Cunningham in 1971 and Dillard Hollis
in 1992; a daughter, Patricia Gayle Cunningham; her parents, Isaac and Jesse
Shelton Norrell; a brother Isaac Norrell; and a sister, Bertie
Allen.
Survivors are two sons, Hoyt Cunningham of Hamburg and Lane Cunningham
of Lake Village; five daughters, Lorene Miles and Elouise McClain of Crossett,
Macel Felchle, LaFran Tucker and Vickie Burch of Hamburg; a sister, Ophelia
Bryan of Bastrop, LA; 27 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and 30
great-great-grandchildren.
Grave-side services were at 2 p.m. Monday, January
3, at the Zion Cemetery with Rev. Tom Norrell officiating and with arrangements
by Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Pallbearers were Monty and Ricky McClain,
Shawn Craig, Paul Tucker, Dane and Heath Cunningham.

LESLIE L. HOOVER, age 89, of Crossett died Friday, January 7, 2000, at the
Crossett Leisure Lodge. She was born February 20, 1910, in Ashley County to Bill
and Vesta O'Neal Couey. Mrs. Hoover was a retired telephone operator, and a
member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James
J. Hoover, and her daughter, Mary Ruth Gates.
Survivors include a son, Bobby
Joe Smith and his wife, Connie, of Sherwood; four granddaughters, Vicki Trammel
of Crossett, Terri Koontz of Dallas, TX, Lisa Bohannon and Susan Risinger, both
of Spearsville, LA; and nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Grave-side services were held Saturday, January 8, at 2:00 p.m. at the Pinewood
Memorial Park with David Newberry officiating, directed by Jones Funeral Home of

CHRISTOPHER ALLEN HOWARD, 16, of Crossett died Thursday, January 6, 2000, in
Crossett. Mr. Howard was a native of Ashley County, a resident of Crossett and a
Baptist. He was proceeded in death by his father, Vance Allen Howard.
He is
survived by his mother, Carolyn Stanley, and his step-father, Willie Stanley;
three brothers, Antonio Charleston, Alonzo Lambert and Marcus Charleston; one
step-brother, William Robinson; and one sister, Veronica Curtis; his maternal
grandmother, Irene Fisher, all of Crossett; his paternal grandparents, George W.
and Lee Ester Howard of Hamburg; and a special friend, Monique
Kennedy.
Funeral services were Thursday, January 13, at 1:00 p.m. at the
Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie R. Taylor officiating.
Pallbearers were Burt Shaw, Elroy Beverly, Herbert William, Curtis Jackson Jr.,
Marcus Harris and Marlee Carter. Honorary pallbearers were William Robinson,
Louis Gaston II, Marcus Jordan, Oliver Caldwell Jr., Edward Morris Jr. and
Jonathan James. Interment was at the Johnson Memorial Cemetery under the
direction of Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
CROSSETT, AR--
MARILYN
HIATT HUDGENS, 73, of Crossett died Wednesday, February
23, 2000, at the Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. Born January
19, 1927, in Gillham to Toney and Pearl Goodwin Hiatt, she was a former
business owner, office manager and bookkeeper for many years in
Crossett. She was treasurer for the City of Crossett in the early
1970s. Also, she was a member, elder and deacon of the Presbyterian
Church of Crossett where she served as choir director and organist for
45 years. She taught private music lessons locally for many years. Mrs.
Hudgens organized the Crossett chapter of the League of Women Voters,
was president of the state organization and treasurer of the national
organization. She helped organize the first genealogical society in
Crossett and the first community chorus and was a founding member of
the Crossett Players where she directed and was associated with many
plays and musicals.
Survivors are her husband, Robert H. Hudgens of Crossett; a son, Randy
Hudgens of College Station, TX; two daughters, Leslie Hill of Crossett
and Susan Mullins of San Antonio, TX; seven grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 26, in the
Presbyterian Church of Crossett with Dr. George Wortham and Robin Allen
officiating. Pallbearers were Scott, Bob and Bain Young, Andy Hill,
Mike Mott and Mike McDaniels. Burial followed services at Pinewood
Memorial Park, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.

MRS. ELLENE HUFFMAN, 77, of Crossett died Monday, December 27, 1999, at the
Beverly Health Care Center in Crossett. A native of Kingsland and a resident of
Hamburg and Crossett for over 60 years, she was a homemaker and member of the
First Church of God. She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Elma
Saelor Thurman, and a sister, Pauline Durham.
Survivors are her husband, Dan
Huffman; a daughter, Karen Batchelor of Crossett; a brother, Virgil Thurman,
Jr., of Warren; two granddaughters, Michelle Grisham and Latonya Batchelor of
Crossett; and five great-grandchildren, Phillip Chavis, Paton, Blake, Larah and
Alex Grisham.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 30, in the
First Church of God in Crossett with Rev. Steve Casey officiating. Pallbearers
were Louie, Joe, Lamar and Larry Huffman, Dale Kerr and Travis Warren. Burial
followed services at the Hamburg Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral Home of

THOMAS
C. HUNTER, 65, of Crossett died Saturday, February 19,
2000, at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little
Rock. Born October 2, 1934, to Grafton Pinson and Lula Marinda Holt
Hunter in Coffeeville, MS, he was an U. S. Army veteran who served in
Germany. He retired from the Georgia-Pacific tissue mill after 33 years
of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the
Arkansas Trace Hunting Club and enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Hunter Outlaw.
Survivors are his wife of 41 years, Pat Hunter; a son, Thomas C.
Hunter, Jr., and a daughter, Felicia Outlaw, all of Crossett; two
brothers, Percy Hunter of Coldwater, TN, and Leroy Hunter of Crossett;
a sister, Marie Walker of Water Valley, MS; and a grandson, Patric
Outlaw of Crossett
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 22, in the First
Baptist Church of Crossett with Dr. David Newberry officiating. Burial
