Ashley County Arkansas Genealogy Trails AKIN, June Hudson BICKLEY, Mary G. de YAMPERT, Ann Uzzelle FOSTER, John Edward HALTOM, Ruby SEWELL, Margaret Thomas COLUMBIA,
SC–JUNE HUDSON AKIN, age 83, a long term resident of Crossett,
AR, died Friday, December 3, 2004, in Providence Hospital in Columbia,
SC. Mrs. Akin was born on January 27, 1921, in Strong, AR, a cherished
daughter of Thomas Walker and Rosalie Murphy Bailey Hudson. She was
blessed with wonderful memories from her childhood in Strong where she
found joy in her vibrant family, travel, basketball, and her many
friends. She graduated from Strong High School as the Salutatorian. She
studied Home Economics, Chemistry, and Math at Louisiana Tech
University and was an active member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. After
graduating college in 1943 and living briefly in Cuba, she accepted
employment with The Crossett Company in the Research Laboratory. In
1946, she married William Dewitt Akin of Drew County, AR. She chose
motherhood as her primary role in life after the birth of her first
child and became a Substitute Teacher in the Crossett Public School
System. Mrs. Akin was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crossett
and the Lydia Sunday School Class. A devoted mother, Mrs. Akin assisted
in various school and civic activities with her children. Her youthful
spirit and the warmth of her laughter will resonate and enrich our
lives forever. Her gracious character was exemplary.
Mrs. Akin was preceded in death by her husband in 1998. Her survivors include: Her two sons and their families, William Dewitt Akin Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of St. Augustine, FL, and their children, Mrs. Carter Bostwick (Allison) of Jacksonville, FL, and William Dustin Akin of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; Thomas Walker Hudson Akin and his wife, Karen, and their children, Erin Elizabeth and Thomas Walker Hudson Akin, Jr., all of Columbia, SC; her daughter and her family, Susan Rose Akin Pye and her husband, Darrell, Susan's children, Carrie Burt Taylor, Mrs. Kevin Floyd (Rebekah), Mary Kathryn Burt and Laura Leigh Burt, all of Macon, GA; five great-grandchildren, Amanda, Lauren and Grace Bostwick of Jacksonville, FL, Madison Akin of Florence, South Carolina, and Emily Burt of Macon, GA. Her sister, Marjorie Hudson Fitzhugh, and her two half sisters, Elizabeth Bailey Mollerberg and Rosalie Bailey preceded Mrs. Akin in death. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, December 9, from 6-8 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 10, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Crossett with the Reverend Stuart Toms and Reverend Larry White officiating. BICKLEY will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 15, 2003 at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Avenue. Officiating will be Dr. Larry Williams, Minister of Senior Adults at Broadmoor Baptist Church. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until noon, Saturday, November 15, 2003 at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Funeral Home. Mrs. Bickley was born May 20, 1925 in Ashley County, AR and died Tuesday, November 11, 2003 in Gulfport, MS. She was a Baptist and a retired bookkeeper. Her husband, Eugene Burt Bickley and sister, Lota Blair preceded her in death. Survivors are her son, Eugene B. Bickley, Jr. of North Augusta, SC daughter, Janet Bickley Sabel of Diamondhead, MS grandchildren, Marlana Rose, Matt, Brad and Regan Bickley sister, Gail Vaughan of Austin, TX and brother, George Roland Gifford, Jr. of Atlanta, GA. Greenville, MS--ANN UZZELLE deYAMPERT, 71, of Greenville, died Saturday, October 1, 2005, at her home. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 4 at St. James Episcopal Church in Greenville with burial at 5 p.m. at the Wilmot Cemetery in Wilmot, AR. Mrs. deYampert was born in Washington County, MS the daughter of George Hampton and Mildred Cayce Uzzelle. She graduated from Miss Hutchinson's School in Memphis, TN and then attended Randolph Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, VA and she graduated from the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS where she was in the Chi Omega Sorority. In 1967 she married William B. deYampert and they made their home in Ashley County, AR. She had charter memberships with Wilmot United Methodist Church in Wilmot, AR and St. James Episcopal Church in Greenville, MS. She is survived by her husband, William B. deYampert of Wilmot, AR; five children, Richard Stock, Jr. and wife Lisa of Wilmot, AR; Cayce Stock and wife Teresa of Wilmot, Sloan Stock Favi and husband Ted of Memphis, Vesta deYampert Fort and husband Arthur of Fairhope, AL, and William B. deYampert, III of New York City, NY; a brother, Hamp Uzzelle and wife Kathie of Mobile, AL; and seven grandchildren, Jane Ann Colvin Stock, Courtney Stock, Mary Ceyce Eskrigge, Brock Eskrigge, Meri Taylor Favi, Abigail Fort, and Arthur Fort. Tampa, FL-- JOHN EDWARD FOSTER, 70, of Tampa, died Sunday (June 7, 1987). Born in Ashley County, Ark., he had lived in Tampa the past 25 years and was a retired automobile mechanic. He was an honorary member of the American Legion, Dale Mabry Post #139. Survivors include his wife, Francis; a son, Charles, Vicksburg, Miss.; four daughters, Shirley McKinzey, Tampa, Mary Dukes, Lake Providence, La., Emily Byers, Orlando, and Ann Bing, Lake Village, Ark.; one brother, Adolph Foster, Napa, Calif.; one sister, Evelyn Cossey, Parkdale, Ark.; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. GRAPEVINE, TX - RUBY HALTOM, a retired bookkeeper and former deputy clerk in Ashley County, Ark., died Tuesday at a Grapevine hospital. She was 86. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today in Bethesda Cemetery in Camden, Ark. Lucas Funeral Home in Grapevine is in charge of local arrangements. Mrs. Haltom was born in Warren, Ark., and lived in Grapevine for more than a year. She was a former resident of Sheridan, Ark. She was a member of Landmark Baptist Church in Sheridan. MARGARET THOMAS SEWELL, 80, of Monroe, will be at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, February 1, 2006, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Rev. Gerald Lewis officiating. Interment will be in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Mrs. Sewell was born July 10, 1925, in Ashley County, AR and died January 28, 2006, in Monroe, LA. She was a member of the Ouachita River Art Guild and the ULM Pottery and Art Department for over twenty years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Shelby Sewell; son, Gerald Wayne Sewell; parents, Henry and Vera Thomas; and brother, John W. Thomas. Survivors include her daughters, Shelley Johnson and husband, Peyton and Rhonda Sewell; brothers, Jack Thomas and Jesse Thomas and wife Darlene; sisters, Marcy Erickson and husband James, Lavon Frazier, Dot Lyde, and Barbara Evans; grandchildren, Kim Huggins and husband Mark, Sherrie Johnson, Rebecca Johnson, and Shelby, Alex, Grace, and Harrison Caldwell; great-grandchildren, Shelley Marsala, Donald Johnson, Victoria and Jake Acra, and Tommy Huggins; great great grandchildren, Blake and Payton McMullen; numerous nieces and nephews; and Art Friends, The Art House and ULM Art Department.
