HAMBURG, ARK--MR.
RUBEN SALAZAR, 40, of Hamburg died Wednesday, February 16,
2000, in Desha County as the result of a logging accident. A native of
Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico, he had lived in Hamburg for the past year
and was a member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He was a saw
operator for Moyers Logging of Montrose.
Survivors include his wife, Silvia Cuellar Salazar; two sons, Rene and
Louis Salazar; a daughter, Rosi Salazar; his father, Miguel Salazar;
four sisters, Flora, Aida, Ines and Martha Salazar, all of Silao,
Guanajuato, Mexico; four brothers, Juan Salazar and Manuel of Sialo and
Guadalupe and Blas Salazar of Hamburg.
Rosary services were at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, February 20, in the chapel of
Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg with a funeral mass at 4 p.m. with Father
Neil Pezzulo officiating. Interment will be Friday, February 25, in the
Silao Cemetery in Mexico, with arrangements by Jones Funeral Home of

Funeral services for MRS.
IONE M. SCOTT, 90, of Farmerville, LA, were at 10 a.m.
Saturday, February 19, 2000, at the Farmerville First Baptist Church
with Bro. David Martin officiating. Burial followed at the Farmerville
City Cemetery with arrangements by Farrar Funeral Home.
Mrs. Scott, who died Wednesday, February 16, 2000, was a native of
Ashley County, a retired secretary for the State Department of Public
Welfare, a member of the Farmerville First Baptist Church and the Ruth
Sunday School Class, a charter member of the Union General Hospital
Auxiliary, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a Girl Scout
leader with the Silver Waters Girl Scout Council. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Jack H. Scott, and a daughter, Jackie Jean
Fischer.
Survivors are a son, Jimmy Scott and wife Beth of Spearsville, LA, a
daughter, Becky Damschen and husband Harv of Roseburg, OR; seven
grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Joe Schick, Stein Baughman, Jr., Fred Stewart, Dewitt
Crow, Ted Lamprich and Wayne Giddens. --Ashley

LA--Services for MRS.
MARGARET THOMAS SEWELL,
80, of Monroe, will be at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, February 1, 2006, in the
chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Rev.
Gerald Lewis officiating. Interment will be in Mulhearn Memorial Park
Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington
Road, Monroe.
Mrs. Sewell was
born July 10,
1925, in Ashley County, AR and died January 28, 2006, in Monroe, LA.
She was a member of the Ouachita River Art Guild and the ULM Pottery
and Art Department for over twenty years. She was preceded in death by
her husband, Willie Shelby Sewell; son, Gerald Wayne Sewell; parents,
Henry and Vera Thomas; and brother, John W. Thomas.
Survivors include
her daughters,
Shelley Johnson and husband, Peyton and Rhonda Sewell; brothers, Jack
Thomas and Jesse Thomas and wife Darlene; sisters, Marcy Erickson and
husband James, Lavon Frazier, Dot Lyde, and Barbara Evans;
grandchildren, Kim Huggins and husband Mark, Sherrie Johnson, Rebecca
Johnson, and Shelby, Alex, Grace, and Harrison Caldwell;
great-grandchildren, Shelley Marsala, Donald Johnson, Victoria and Jake
Acra, and Tommy Huggins; great great grandchildren, Blake and Payton
McMullen; numerous nieces and nephews; and Art Friends, The Art House
and ULM Art Department.
Pallbearers will be
Chad Holcomb, Bobby Lyde, Mark Huggins, Willie Holcomb, Gary Ratcliff
and Mike Sewell.
Visitation will be
from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM, Wednesday, at Mulhearn Funeral Home,

CROSSETT, ARK--MARIE SIMPSON, 82, of Crossett died Saturday, January 22, 2000, at the Crossett
Leisure Lodge. Born in Crossett April 12, 1917, to L. L. and Braska Standard
Kelley, she worked at the Minit Shop for many years and was a member of the
First United Methodist Church of Crossett. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Robert Simpson.
Survivors are a brother, Willis Kelley of Kennett,
MO: a sister, Jayne Pennington of Crossett; and many nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Monday, January 24, in the First
United Methodist Church of Crossett with Rev. Larry Williams and Bro. Bobby
Pennington officiating. Pallbearers were Philip, Jerry and Bobby Pennington,
Laron Burke, Tommy Kelley and Rex Dodson. Burial followed services at the
Lakewood Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett. --Ashley

LAKE VILLAGE--JAMES
C. SMITH, 92, of Lake Village died Monday, January 31,
2000, at the Chicot Memorial Hospital. Born in Savannah, TN, on April
23, 1907, to the late James C. and Maggie J. Thomas Smith, he was a
farmer, had a land clearing business and was a caretaker of the
Woodstock Island Hunting Club for 50 years. An avid sportsman and a
member of the Lake Village Baptist Church, he was preceded in death by
a son, James Christopher "Scooter" Smith in 1968 in Vietnam.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Marjorie W. Smith of Lake
Village; a son, William H. Smith of Lake Village; a daughter, Sherry
Copete of Houston, TX; grandchildren Melissa B. and husband Robert
McArthur of Portland, Christopher and wife Beverly Boyd of Jackson, MS,
Bill, Keith and Bruce Smith of California; great-grandchildren Megan,
Shelby and Robert McArthur of Portland and Matt, Jason and Tyler Boyd
of Jackson, MS; a brother, Durwood Smith of Mobile, AL; and a sister,
Margaret Wright of Mayflower.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 2, in the Lake
Village Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Albritton officiating and with
eulogies by State Rep. Sammy Angel and Dean Evans. . Pallbearers were
Dean Evans, Sam Angel, Larkin Brown, Bob Neal, Jerry Seamans, and
Shanon Talkington. Honorary pallbearers were Red Gearing and Johnny
Grassi. Burial followed services at the Lake Village City Cemetery with
arrangements by Steele Funeral Home of Lake Village. --Ashley

WILMOT, AR--ORA
LEE SMITH, 66, of Kansas City, KS, formerly of Wilmot,
died Tuesday, February 28, 2000, in Kansas City. She was a native of
Ashley County, a resident of Kansas City for the past two years, a
homemaker and a member of the Rising Star Baptist Church.
Survivors are her husband, Norman Smith; two sons, Herbert Smith of
Wilmot and Kenneth Woods of Kansas City, KS; two daughters, Regina
Smith of Minneapolis, MN, and Margaret Bolton of Kansas City, KS; two
sisters, Mary Lou Brown and Lucille Strickland of Wilmot; 16
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were planned for 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 7, in the Union
Baptist Church in Wilmot with Rev. David Green officiating. Pallbearers
were to be Herbert Smith, Kenneth Woods, Norman Bolton, Kenneth Woods,
Jr., Marcus Wilson, Mario Wilson, Marton Wilson and Michael Wilson.
Burial was to follow services at the Walnut Grove, directed by Cromwell

HAMBURG, ARK--MR.
SHIRLEY SWAN, 80, of Hamburg died Monday, January 24,
2000, at the Ashley County Medical Center. A native of Hamburg and
life-time resident of the Pine Hill community, he was a member of the
Trinity Freewill Baptist Church and an U. S. Army veteran of World War
II.. He retired from the Georgia-Pacific plywood mill in 1978 after 30
years of service. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles "Buster"
Swan in 1995; a daughter, Cathy Swan, in 1953; his parents, John W. and
Hattie Jordan Swan; three brothers, Louis, Radford and Lonnie Swan;
three sisters, including his twin, Verlie Swan, and Addine Leigh and
Nathalee Bozeman Martin.
Survivors include his wife, Iva Kate Norrell Swan; a daughter, Susan
Kay Swan of Longview, TX; a daughter-in-law, Kathryn Norrell Swan of
Hamburg; a brother, Rayford Swan of Hamburg; a sister, Donnie
Pennington of Crossett; a grandson, Jason Lovett of Hamburg; and many
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, in the Trinity
Freewill Baptist Church with Revs. Paul McKissick and Lawrence Amos
officiating. Pallbearers were Johnny and Billy Mark Swan, Kenneth and
Johnnie Leigh, Wesley and Jerry Swan and Ronnie Bozeman. Burial
followed services at the Carlock Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral
