Cleveland County was first known as Dorsey County
Cleveland County was organized August 17, 1873. The Arkansas legislature established Dorsey County as Arkansas' 71st county. It was named for Stephen W. Dorsey, a United States Senator from Arkansas. He was indicted for defrauding the Post Office and the county renamed it on March 5, 1885 for newly elected President Grover Cleveland.
