Crawford County
Crawford County was formed October 18, 1820 and was the largest county in Arkansas at the time of its creation.
The county was named for William H. Crawford, United States Secretary of War in 1815.
It was originally part of eight counties and the Indian Territory. It is in Western Arkansas, located largely within the Ozarks, with the southern border of the county being the Arkansas River.

The frontier county became an early crossroads, beginning with a California Gold Rush and developing into the Butterfield Overland Mail, as well as Civil War trails and railroads.

Van Buren is the county seat.

The Ozark Mountains are located in the northern part of the county with rolling farmland, ridges, mountain and lakes in the southern half.

The 2000 population was 53,247.
