 Bert T. Cruse

Date of birth: 04/04/1918 Age at death: 92

Bert T. Cruse JONESBORO - Bert Cruse, 92, a kind, gentle, caring and generous man, went to his heavenly home on Independence Day 2010. Daddy Bert (as his grandchildren called him) was born on his family's farm in Goobertown on April 4, 1918. He grew up in the Goobertown community, graduated from Greene County Tech and attended Arkansas State College (now Arkansas State University). He taught school in Bowman and was later appointed deputy county clerk for Craighead County. After borrowing $200 in "pin money" from his mother to help fund his race for office, and after climbing "every fence in the county and shaking the hand of every voter in the county," he was elected county clerk. After his service in county government, Bert entered the real estate business, specializing in the sale and financing of farm property. He was the loan service officer for Mutual of New York Life Insurance Co., and he shared office space with the Mooney Law Firm for decades. Bert's family liked being in public with him because many people came up with a warm handshake and slap on the back. Everyone loved Bert. Baptized as a teen-ager in a stock pond at Goobertown, Bert attended New Antioch Baptist Church. In later years, he was a member and children's teacher at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Jonesboro. He was predeceased by his first wife, Calla Mae, and his second wife, Roselind. He is survived by a son, Michael L. Cruse (Susan) of Fayetteville; two grandchildren, Beth (Matt) Saferite and Brad (Laura) Cruse, three great-grandchildren of Fayetteville and New York City; a stepson, Pat McAdams (Donna) of Albuquerque, N.M.; and two great-nieces, Rhonda Rogers of Jonesboro and Dana Linn of Clinton. The family expresses gratitude to Bert's longtime colleagues at work, Shirley Collins and Bridget Downs, who remained faithful in their friendship long after Bert left the office. We also thank Joann Treat and the staff of Happy Helpers and Southwind Heights. You all were the reason Daddy Bert lived in comfort after daily life became a challenge. We thank the Lord for you. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. today at Roller Farmers Union Funeral Home, with burial at a graveside service in Paragould's Linwood Cemetery at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 6.
