INDEPENDENCE COUNTY

The county was formed October 20, 1820 and was named to honor the Declaration of Independence.
The county seat is at Batesville.   It was the home of Governor Elisha Baxter.
The 2000 population was 34,233.

Genealogy Trails is a group started in Illinois in 2000 and expanded in 2006 to all fifty states. The museum and archive center is housed in a former National Guard armory.  It was built as a WPA project in 1936.  The museum serves a 12-county region, Baxter, Cleburne, Fulton, Independence, Izard, Jackson, Marion, Poinsett, Sharp, Stone, White and Woodruff counties..  The research wing includes an archive, family history files and public records.  It is located at 380 South Ninth St. in Batesville.
