INDEPENDENCE COUNTY

The county was formed October 20, 1820 and was named to honor the Declaration of Independence.
The county seat is at Batesville.   It was the home of Governor Elisha Baxter.
The 2000 population was 34,233.

Genealogy Trails is a new group started in Illinois in 2000 and expanded in 2006 to all fifty states. If you love history and genealogy like the dedicated volunteers that put the Illinois Genealogy Trail together and you want to be a part of Arkansas Genealogy Trails, you can volunteer by contacting Kim after reading our volunteer page. This county needs adopted. We are in need of State and County Coordinators.
