leave to check on his family. His wife, Martha, only told one
neighbor that she was expecting him to return to Johnson County, but

family practically out of food. His wife had one small bag of
corn. On March 18 William took the bag of corn and rode the

meal. A band of bushwackers had heard of his return and ambushed
him in his yard when he arrived home with the meal. His wife,
Martha, and their children retreated to the attic through a trap door
and watched from a small window as he was tied to a tree, spread-eagled
and used for target practice; his body was riddled with bullet holes.
