Dallas was born Aug. 2, 1915 at Pettigrew, Arkansas to Martha Jane Ritchie and John Henry Harris. He was the sixth child of a family of ten children. The family earned their livelihood by operating a family sawmill and farming around Ozark, Arkansas. Dallas moved to Meridian, Idaho in 1936, following other relatives who had moved to Idaho during difficult economic times in Arkansas. In 1937 he returned to the Arkansas-Oklahoma area where he met and married Alta Watson, his wife of 62 years. In 1938, they returned to Idaho where they lived thereafter. In 1939 Dallas and his brother, Ivan, established Harris Brothers Lumber Co in the Thorn Creek area. At Thorn Creek they established a "lumber town" with a church and school and homes for workers, many of whom were relatives. In 1945 Harris Brothers Lumber Co was moved to Idaho City. Then in 1952 after the sawmill burned for the second time, Dallas and Ivan purchased a sawmill on Warm Springs Avenue, east of Boise, and thereafter established Harris Brothers Lumber Co in Boise. Harris Brothers was sold to Boise Cascade in 1961. After the sale of Harris Brothers, Dallas and Ivan acquired the ranch at Highway 21 and Eckert Road, and raised Hereford cattle and Appaloosa horses. In 1967 Dallas bought Producers Lumber Co and again became active in the lumber business that he enjoyed so much. He had the idea for and began laying the foundation for the Harris Ranch Development at least 20 years ago. He served in many professional organizations with the timber industry. Education was a special interest to Dallas and he was active in the establishment of Magic Valley Christian College in Albion, Idaho, and was a longtime member of the board of directors of Hardin Christian College in Searcy, Arkansas. Dallas and his brother, Ivan, donated 22 acres of land for Camp Ivydale, a Christian camp near Idaho City. Dallas and Alta have been active members of the Church of Christ throughout their lives. Dallas was a longtime elder of the Eldorado Church of Christ in Boise. Dallas was active in the Democratic party and had many fund raising events at the ranch in the Barber Valley. He served on the Ada Planning and Zoning Commissions, various livestock clubs and community organizations. Dallas is survived by his wife, Alta; four children, Felicia Burkhalter, Gary Harris and wife, Bonnie, Millie Davis and husband, Jack, and Randy Harris and wife, Kathy; six grandchildren, Dallas Burkhalter, Amy Burkhalter, Ogden and Gretchen Harris, Darcie Harris and Stephanie Davis; two great-grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren; also two sisters, Fern Burton and Gladys Kafvelstrom; as well as many nieces and nephews. Dallas loved life and was an example to us in the way he lived and treated his family and many friends. He especially enjoyed meals with friends and family working with the cattle and his observing wildlife while traveling, and he never forgot to pick flowers for Alta, whom he most dearly loved. The family would especially like to thank Dr. James Quinn, and the many caregivers who eased the last four years of Dallas's life.
