Violet Cemetery is in Osceola, Arkansas, on S. Ash Street between
E. Johnson and E. Semmes Streets. It is significant because it is where many of the early settlers of Mississippi County are
buried. Violet Cemetery has been nominated to the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program and the National Register of
Historic Places. The earliest marked grave is from 1831, which predates both the formation of the County and Arkansas statehood.
In the early 1900s, the cemetery had fallen into disrepair, with fallen
headstones and sunken graves. A group of local ladies contacted relatives of those buried there, and they formed a Cemetery Association
which reset the stones and filled the graves with dirt. Within five years, violets were planted on all of the graves, and the
cemetery became known as Violet Cemetery.
Today, there are 634 marked graves and about 65 unmarked graves.
70% are at least 50 years old. Many pioneer families have members buried there. 42 Confederate soldiers
are buried here, as is Thomas Craighead, for whom Craighead County was named. There are
veterans from the Spanish-American War, both World Wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam War here, also.
