Information about Serial Numbers:

There are several keys to the military serial numbers. The first key is whether it is made up of numbers completely, or if there is a letter prefix. Male enlisted personnel had simple 7-digit or 8-digit serial numbers; other personnel had a prefix.

Regular Army enlisted who entered the service before the Selective Service began have 7-digit serial numbers that usually begin with "6" or "7". Men who enlisted in the Army of the United States have 8-digit serial numbers beginning with "1", and the second digit indicaates the Service Command of Origin; National Guard have 8-digit serial numbers beginning with "2", and the third digit indicates the Service Command. Men who were inducted or enlisted through Selective Service have 8-digit numbers beginning with "3" or "4", and the second digit indicates the Service Command.

Serial numbers with a prefix are as follows: O- for male commissioned officers; W- for male Warrant officers; T- for Flight officers of the Army Air Forces; L- for commissioned officers of the Women's Army Corps; V- for WAC Warrant officers; A- for WAC enlisted women; R- for Hospital dietitians, and M- for Physical Therapy Aides.
