Little Rock, Ark., June 8, 1854
To Rev. J.J. Cowart:
Sir: Having learned from the proclamation of
the Governor of the State, that you have been arrested and imprisioned
in Monroe county, Arks., upon an indictment for forgery, and that you
have escaped justice to unknown parts, I am compelled from the nature
of the case, in the discharge of duty to address you this notice
through the columns of a newspaper.
You are hereby notified, to attend the 3rd quarterly
meeting conference, Little Rock Station, Methodist Episcopal church
south for trial on the following charges and specifications, on the 3rd
day of July next.
The Methodist E. Church South vs. Rev. J.J. Cowart
Charge 1st. Gross immorality.
Specification 1st. Lying in relation to some money which was placed in
his hands by Mrs. Bridges to pay the tax on certain property which was
advertised for sale.
Specification 2nd. Attempting to obtain a large amount
of hardware from a firm in Cincinnati, Ohio, under false pretences.
Specification 3d. Collecting money from the masons of
Batesville for the firm of A.W. Hicks & Co., all of Arkansas,
without any authority, and then appropriating the funds to his own use,
and afterwards denied to Wm. Mills having received payment.
Specification 4th. An Indictment found by the grand
jury of Monroe county, Ark., for forgery.
Charge 2d.
Failure to attend the duties of his functions, and to
attend church as the discipline requires.
