Poinsett County was formed on February 28, 1838 from Greene and St. Francis counties.
Named for Joel Roberts Poinsett, U.S. Secretary of War
The county seat was located at Bolivar until 1856, when it was moved to Harrisburg. A fire destroyed the records in 1873, reportedly complete from that date.
Poinsett County ranks 5th in rice production according to the 1997 Census of Agriculture.
