Poinsett County Arkansas Genealogy Trails COX, Dr. Robert Lee, Sr. MILLER, Johnnie Katherine (Jester) SWAIN, Lloyd Kelley WEEKS, Don Green Cape Girardeau, MO.--DR. ROBERT LEE COX, SR, 76, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, September 28, 2007 at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was was born October 26, 1930 in Harrisburg, Ark., son of Joseph William and Winifred Howard Cox. He and Betty L. Scott were married June 3, 1956 in Mound City, Kan. Cox was a graduate of Little Rock, Ark., High School. He received a bachelor of science degree and a master's degree in education from Kansas State College in Pittsburg, and a doctorate of education degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He served in the U. S. Army from 1951 to 1953, and was an x-ray technician in a hospital during the Korean conflict. Cox has lived in Cape Girardeau since 1964, moving from Chanute, Kan. He came to Southeast Missouri State University to develop and organize a production and printing program. He was professor of the Industrial Technology Department 27 years, served as department chairman six years, retiring in 1991. He previously taught at Altamont, Kan. High School and Chanute High School and Junior College. Cox was a member of Illmo Baptist Church in Scott City, MO and was past minister of music at Illmo Baptist and Red Star Baptist in Cape Girardeau. He was active in the Charleston Baptist Association, was ordained a deacon at First Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau, directed the Baptist Student Union Choir on the Southeast campus from 1970 to 1985. (All former BSU Choir members are invited to gather and sing at the funeral service.) He was a member of several professional organizations, serving as national president of Iota Lambda Sigma and International Graphic Arts Educational Association. Cox served on the executive board of the Missouri Baptist Convention and the Word and Way Committee. Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Cox of Cape Girardeau; two sons, Robert L. Jr and Janie Cox of Jackson, MO, Scott D. Cox of Columbia, MO; daughter-in-law, Debbie Cox of Scott City; five grandchildren, Jordan Cox, Jason Cox, Sarah Pruden, Neil Sanders, Lisa Sanford; four great-grandchildren, Lance Pruden, Trent Pruden, Joseph Sanders and Megan Sanders. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Charles W. Cox, and a brother, Dick Cox. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, 2007 at First Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bob Herring and Jack Bishop officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park, with full military rites by Missouri Honor Team. Sikeston, MO--JOHNNIE KATHERINE MILLER, 70, of Sikeston died Monday, Aug 13, 2007 at the home of her
daughter. She was born March 13, 1937 at Marked Tree, Ark.,
daughter of William and Dortch Hilliard Jester. She and Jack
Miller were married Dec 26, 1957 at Morley, MO. Miller was a
nurse 22 years with Visiting Nurse Association. She was a member
of Christian Tabernacle. Survivors include her husband; two sons,
Terry Miller of Matthews, MO, Anthony Miller of Bell City, MO; a
daughter, Beverly Gibson of Benton, MO; three brothers, Garrett Jester
of Wenatchee, Wash., Lloyd Jester of Kenosha, WI, Harold Jester of
Sikeston; two sisters, Brenda Taylor of Benton, Betsy Jester of Oran,
MO; a half-sister, Mary Makzurkiewitz of Kankakee, IL; eight
grandchildren and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death
by a daughter, two brothers and two sisters. Friends may call
from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug 15, 2007 at Ponder Funeral Home in
Sikeston. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug 16,
2007 at the funeral home with the Rev. Eric McDougal and Garrett Jester
officiating. Burial will be in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery
at Bloomfield, MO.
Chaffee, MO--LLOYD KELLEY SWAIN, 89, of Chaffee died Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at his home. He was born Sept. 27, 1918 in Trumann, Ark., son of Guy and Orphia Crain Swain. He and Siddie Yancy were married May 25, 1946. Swain retired as a heavy equipment operator with Operating Engineers Local 513 of St. Louis. He was a member of First Baptist Church, VFW Post 3127 and Elks Lodge 1810, all in Chaffee. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Kelley and Mike Swain of Chaffee, Bob Swain of Fort Pierce, FL; a daughter, Judy Finley of Chaffee; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Friday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Chaffee. The graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Union Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Brian Anderson officiating. Military rites will be provided by Missouri Military Honors Program. Cape Girardeau, MO.--DON GREEN WEEKS, 72, of Spring Hill, FL, formerly of Cape Girardeau, passed away peacefully Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007, surrounded by his family, following a battle with cancer. Don was born Sept. 23, 1935 in Harrisburg, AR, son of Herman and Alona Weeks. He and Vi Dunaway were married July 4, 1966 at Branson, MO. He served in the Arkansas National Guard during the 1950s. Don retired in 1991 from Arkansas Best Freight Lines after 30 years of service. He was a member of Teamsters Local 957 in Dayton, OH. Don was a member of Mariner United Methodist Church in Spring Hill. Survivors include his wife, Vi; a brother, Gerald Weeks of Memphis, TN; five children, Carol Askew (Bill) of Spring Hill, Michael Dunaway (Mary Etta) of Cape Girardeau, Steve Dunaway (Barb) of Dayton, Dan Dunaway (Tammy) of St. Petersburg, FL, and David Dunaway of St. Louis; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Catherine; brothers, Billy, Doc, Harry, Lee and Guy. He will be missed by his family and friends and remembered for his selfless contributions to others. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday (Aug 25, 2007) at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home, with the Rev. Oscar Lukefahr officiating. Interment will be in Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum. |
