SPRINGDALE BOY SHOT; FUNERAL TO BE SUNDAY

Fayetteville Daily Democrat, Sept 3 1921

Springdale, Sept 3--Funeral services for Lawrence Boone Jr., aged 17, who was shot and killed yesterday afternoon by Bayless Beach also of Springdale, will be held Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock at Friendship Cemetery. Coroner's jury late Friday declared that the young Boone met his death by accidental shooting. Boon and Beach, who were about the same age, had been doing cowboy stunts in a room in the Commercial Hotel, of which Boone's father is proprietor. In a spirit of play Beach grabbed a .44 Colt, which he did not believe to be loaded, pointed it at his friend and pulled the trigger. The bullet entered Boone's body on the right side above the abdomen and came out under the left rib. He died three hours later.  (Source:  Fayetteville Daily Democrat, Sept 3, 1921, contributed by Mary Wilson)

FLU EPIDEMIC TESTS

Tests made during the recent influenza epidemic on 300 students and faculty members of the University of Arkansas indicate that air containing minute quantities of chlorine breathed for five minutes a day tends to prevent the development of the flu. The case rate in the entire University population was 133 per 1,000, while in those taking the treatment it was 44 per 1,000. Eliminating those who were already ill or who did not complete the treatment, it was only 13 per 1,000, or one-tenth of the rate among those not " gassed." The experiments were conducted by Dr. Harrison Hale, professor of chemistry. --Source: The American Chemical Society at New Haven printed in TIME Magazine, Saturday, Apr. 14, 1923
