Yell County was created December 5, 1840 from Pope and Scott counties. It was named for Archibald Yell, a governor and the first member of the United States House of Representatives from Arkansas. Yell died in combat in the Mexican War.

Yell County has two county seats, Dardanelle and Danville, with the court house at the following address:
