EGGERT, CHARLES F.

Last Rites Said Here for Father of Roseville Man

Charles F. Eggert, father of R. H. Eggert, who died last Tuesday at Oakland, was buried at Sylvan Cemetery yesterday following funeral services at the Broyer & Magner Chapel. Rev. M. E. Coen, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, conducted the services. The deceased was 80 years of age. He had been in ill health for six months. For several years he conducted a furniture store at Lakeport, moving to Oakland about three years ago. The widow will make her home in Roseville. Charles F. Eggert, a native of Pennsylvania, was born October 14, 1852. While yet a small boy, his parents moved to Nebraska. Here he grew to manhood and at the age of 25 he was married to Marie M. Granquist. To them were born nine children, five of whom are still living. They are: Mrs. Lillian M. Kale of Everson, Washington; Mrs. Eva M. Cannaugh of Omaha, Nebraska; Elmer E. Eggert of Grundy Center, Iowa; Leslie F. Eggert of Chicago, Illinois; and R. H. Eggert of Roseville, California. At the time of his marriage he was engaged in the general merchandise business. They removed to western Kansas in 1887 where they owned and farmed a larger acreage. Mrs. Eggert died in 1897. Mr. Eggert later married Mrs. Johanna King who had a son, Clarence King, and a daughter, Mabel King. They also adopted and raised a granddaughter, Pearl King-Eggert, who has made her home with them since she was two years old. In 1903 they again moved to Everson, Washington, and engaged in the hardware and furniture business. Nine years later they moved to Lakeport, California, and engaged in the furniture business, from which business he retired four years ago and moved to Oakland to pass his declining years. He was at all times a kind and loving husband and father, and as a neighbor the helping hand was never withheld. Throughout his whole life he was active in the affairs of the church and a firm believer in the head of the church. The church of his choice was the Presbyterian. Until recent years, he was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. Wherever he has resided, he has always been affectionately known as “Dad Eggert” to the old and the young. Nearly three years ago, he suffered a nervous breakdown and has been in poor health ever since. During the last ten weeks, he had been confined to his bed. LUNDSTROM, THOMAS W.

Berkeley Youth Dies in Fall from Cable

Thomas W. Lundstrom, 19, Berkeley, electrical student, died at Auburn Friday of a broken neck. He hurtled 20 feet to the bouldered shore of the American River when the Pioneer Mine’s aerial tram cable above the river broke under his weight New Year’s Day. Lundstrom’s body was taken to Berkeley. He is an orphan and is survived by a sister, Esther, and a brother, Cameron. Young Lundstrom was spending the holidays with a friend, William Ebberts, ranch owner in the mountains above Auburn. He went hiking with Frank Dorer, a youth of his age who lives in the neighborhood. They came to the river and decided to cross in the little box-like tramcar. Lundstrom climbed in the car and started pulling himself out toward the waterline. Suddenly the tautened cable broke, and the lad plunged upon the rocks. The unconscious boy was carried seven miles over rocky mountainous trails and through tangled underbrush to the Pioneer Mine. Dr. L. B. Barnes of Newcastle was summoned. He had the boy brought to Auburn. Lundstrom was graduated from Berkeley High School a year ago. He was working with the Western Electric Company to gain experience before taking an electrical engineering course at the University of California. STODDARD, SAMUEL BURR
Samuel Burr Stoddard
Missing the century mark only by a few years, Samuel Burr Stoddard, one of the oldest residents of California, member of the historic vigilantes of San Francisco, and father of Charles Warren Stoddard, the world-renowned author of California, passed away February at his home in Berkeley. Stoddard had attained the advanced age of 95 years, and until his final illness which seized him a few weeks ago, had been wonderfully strong and robust. Samuel Burr Stoddard came of good stock. The first of his ancestors to arrive in this country was Anthony Stoddard who landed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1839, and whose grave is in the old Granary Cemetery on Tremont Street in that city among those of the first governors of the colony. From this branch of the family tree sprung Jonathan Edwards, once president of Harvard; Aaron Burr; General Sherman; Charles Augustus Stoddard, author; John L. Stoddard, lecturer; Grace Greenwood, poet, author, lecturer and one of the famous women of her time.
Deceased was born in Pembroke, New York, in 1813. He married Harriet Freeman in 1837 and settled in Rochester, New York, where for some years he and his father-in-law, Charles Freeman, owned and ran the Genesse Paper Mills. He came to California in 1852; was associated with the firm of William T. Coleman & Co. and with Stowell and Stoddard, merchandise brokers. He spent some time in the Hawaiian Islands, but upon losing his sight retired to Berkeley where for several years his youngest son, Frederick Church Stoddard, had been his constant companion. A daughter, Mrs. Parker Makee, now in Europe, and two sons – Charles Warren Stoddard and Frederic Church Stoddard – are the sole survivors of a family of eight. Mr. Stoddard was an active church worker. He was one of the founders of the First Presbyterian Church of San Francisco. In the stormy days of San Francisco, when the lawless element was so audacious that the famous vigilantes were brought into existence, he played a prominent part. With the late William T. Coleman, he assisted in organizing the vigilantes and was one of the men who dragged the cannon in front of the old San Francisco jail and compelled the officers, under threat of fire, to delivery Casey and Corey, the two outlaws, who were immediately hanged by order of “Judge Lynch.” About five years ago, Mr. Stoddard was stricken with blindness, and although life was to him total darkness, he had often expressed the desire to live to reach the hundredth milestone along life’s journey, and, in his desire he fell short five years, having exceeded the allotted three score and ten by twenty-four years.
