Alpine County is the smallest county, by population in the state of California. It is located in the Sierra Nevada, between Lake Tahoe and the Yosemite National Park.

In 1864, Alpine County was formed from parts of Amador, El Dorado, Calaveras and Tuolumne Counties. There are no corporate cities in Alpine County; Markleeville is the county seat.  Markleeville was named after Jacob J. Marklee, an early settler who was shot and killed two years after he settled here.

All towns and villages in Alpine county, California, are unincorporated.
