A History of the Mattole Valley by W.E. Rosco --1940--

The Indian population was very numerous in Mattole Valley. The Indians had never seen white men before and fled in terror at the sight of Mr. Hill's party. The Hill expedition made the Mattole Valley known to the settlers of the Lower Eel River Valley and Humboldt Bay Section. If tradition is to be trusted, other white men came into the Valley in 1855 and 1856. There they selected land taking possession under a squatter's right. There farming commenced in earnest in 1858.
Among the settlers who located there during this time was Albert G. Lafferty born in Arkansas. .
