From "The Ferndale Enterprise" 7 June 1929, Friday ALBERT LAFFERTY KILLED
YESTERDAY AT WILLIAMS CREEK Crushed beneath a mass of
falling gravel at the county's gravel pit up Williams
Creek. Albert Lafferty, a well known resident of
Ferndale, met practically instant death about 11:15
o'clock yesterday forenoon.
The unfortunate man was about ten feet below the top of
the gravel bank, which at that point is more than fifty
feet in height, making preparation to sink a hole into
gravel to put in a blast. From where he stood the bank
was about perpendicular to the top, perhaps a distance
of ten feet, while below him the gravel which had been
loosened sloped steeply to the ground. Without warning a
small section of the gravel above gave way, landing
squarely on the doomed man. It did not bury him and he
was immediately seized by Joe O'Connell who was working
a few feet away and carried to safety down the sloping
bank of gravel to the ground. He was unconscious and was
taken immediately to Ferndale Hospital where an
examination by Dr.H.J.Ring, who was hastily summoned
disclosed that he was dead. His neck was broken, as were
his legs, an arm, his jaw, and practically every bone in
his body. It is probable that death was instantaneous.
Coroner Oscar Swanson was notified shortly after noon
yesterday of the fatality and stated that he would be in
Ferndale last evening to hold an inquest over the
remains.
In conversation with Giulo Martignoli of this town a few
days ago Mr. Lafferty had commented on the possibility
that he might be killed some day by falling gravel,
apparently having had premonition of death, stated Mr.
Martignoli, yesterday.
Albert Lafferty was a native of this county, aged about
53 years, and had resided in Ferndale and vicinity most
of his life. he was a son of the late A.G. Lafferty, a
pioneer resident of Southern Humboldt, who was an early
day settler in the Mattole country and for many years
before his death made his home up Williams Creek. He
leaves no known relatives.
Friends in this community will learn of his tragic death
with sincere regret. Arrangements for the funeral had
not been made yesterday afternoon.
14 June 1929 ALBERT LAFFERTY FUNERAL IS HELD

death as the result of an accident of Williams Creek
Thursday, when he was caught by a mass of falling

David Miller of the Ferndale. M.E. Church officiated,
