Long Beach Earthquake 1933, Los Angeles County California

The Long Beach Earthquake was the first devastating earthquake to strike the Los Angeles after it had become a metropolitan center. It hit at 5:54 p.m. March 10, 1933, along the Newport-Inglewood fault. The epicenter was located 2 miles offshore, southwest of Huntington Beach. It registered 6.3 on the Richter scale and struck heavily populated areas, causing 102 fatalities and millions of dollars of damage.

The Artesia Garage, formerly the Pondel General Store, located on the northeast
corner of Pioneer and 187th Street, was severely damaged and could no longer be used.

 

 

Excelsior High School

 

 

Excelsior High School, built in 1924, suffered extensive damage in the quake.
