Marin County Obituaries
Peter Bottini - Private funeral services were
held today for Peter Bottini, 69, long time resident of
San Rafael, who died yesterday in a local hospital after
a long illness. Bottini was a cement contractor for
nearly 40 years before entering the hospital. He is
survived by his wife, Mrs. Caroline Bottini; two
daughters, Norvina Hilton and Helen Workman; one son,
Andre Bottini; and two grandchildren, Audrey Bottini and
Andre B. Bottini, Jr. Services were held at Keaton's
mortuary, San Rafael. Burial followed at Mt. Olivet
cemetery.

William J. Brooks - Funeral services will be held
at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Cannair mortuary, Fort Bragg, for
William J. Brooks, 91, of Mill Valley who was killed
yesterday in a traffic accident on U. S. 101 near Alto wye.
Brooks died instantly when he walked into the side of a car
driven by Mark L. Gerstle III, 32, 2015 Fifth avenue, San
Rafael. Gerstle, a radio commentator in Oakland, was cleared
of blame by highway patrolmen and was not held. A native of
Maine, Brooks moved to Fort Bragg in 1900. He was a member
of the Fort Bragg police force from 1919-30 and moved to
Marin about three years ago. He lived at 27 Central avenue,
Mill Valley. He is survived by two sons, Claude J. Brooks,
Los Angeles, and Harold J. Brooks, Midway Island; a
daughter, Mrs. Albert A. Gunnell, Mill Valley; three
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Interment will
be in Fort Bragg cemetery. Services will be under direction
of Harry M. Williams mortuary, San Rafael.

Grace E. Cates - Funeral services for Grace E. Cates,
who died today in San Rafael, will be held Monday at 1 :30
p.m. at Keaton's Mortuary, 5th and E, San Rafael. Mrs. Cates
was the wife of Homer Cates, and worked with him in his
tailoring shop at Hamilton Field. She had resided with her
husband at 23 Sentinel court, San Rafael for the past 17
years. Death followed a lengthy illness in a San Francisco
hospital. Mrs. Cates, a native of Texas, was 49. She
belonged to the Hamilton Field post, American Legion
Auxiliary, and the First Baptist church of San Anselmo.
Survivors include Homer F. Cates, Mrs. Mattie Adcock, Mrs.
Sadie Reagan, Mrs. Leona Curry, and Walter, Evan, Luther,
Alonzo, and James Adcock.

Mary F. Church - Funeral services are scheduled for
tomorrow for Mrs. Mary F. Church, a life-long resident of
Sausalito, who died in her home yesterday after a short illness.
She was 56. Mrs. Church made her home at 211 Caledonia street.
She is survived by a son, Wesley Church; and a daughter, Mrs.
Viola Willmschen. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 1:
15 p.m. at Frank Keston mortuary, Sausalito. Burial will be in
Golden Gate National cemetery.

Col. Joseph Derham of San Rafael, supply officer for
Gen. George Patton's smashing armored campaigns against the
Germans in World War II, died yesterday in a San Francisco
hospital. He was 61. Derham, who lived at 103 C street,
joined Patton's staff early in the war after a career as
attorney in San Francisco, where he aided Public
Administrator William Hymes. He flew with the U. S. Army Air
Force as a major in World War I. The San Rafael man is often
credited by Army officials with an instrumental part in
rushing gasoline to Patton's tanks when the famed Third Army
commander would drive deep into Nazi positions far ahead of
his own supply lines. Surviving Derham are his wife, Rose
Marie, and a brother, Dr. Francis E. Derham of San Rafael.
Derham was a member of Zane Grey post of the American
Legion, Press-Union League club, and the California State
Bar Association. A high requiem mass will be held tomorrow
at 9 a.m. in St. Brigid's church, San Francisco. Services
will be under the auspices of Halsted & Co., funeral
directors. Interment will be in National cemetery at the
Presidio.

Mrs. Jeanie McLardy Edgar, 16 years a
resident of Mill Valley, died at her home today
after a lingering illness. She was 74. Mrs. Edgar
came to the United States in 1935 from her native
Scotland, settled in Mill Valley with her husband,
the late Robert Edgar, and had lived in the Marin
community since. She leaves Andrew Edgar, a son, of
San Francisco, and Mrs. John K. Fulton, a daughter,
of Mill Valley and two grandchildren, Jane and John
Edgar Fulton. Mrs. Edgar was a member of Daughters
of Scotia Lodge No. 227. Services will be held at 2
p.m. Tuesday at Russell and Gooch Memorial Chapel,
Mill Valley. Burial will be at Mt. Tamalpais
Cemetery, San Rafael.

Mrs. Annie Twinen Galway, a former 25 year
resident of Mill Valley, died in her home in Auburn
Saturday following a brief illness. She was 71. Mrs.
Galway, who moved to Auburn four years ago, was a
member of Crystal Chapter No. 57, Order of Eastern
Star, past noble grand of Blithedale Rebekahs, and a
charter member of Sequoia Court No. 79, Order of
Amaranth. She is survived by her husband, James
Galway; a daughter, Mrs. Violet Noonen, San
Francisco; and a son, Chester C. Galway, Sausalito.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow
at Auburn Masonic Temple from West and Hite Funeral
home, 1331 Lincoln Way, Auburn, Crystal Chapter No.
57, Order of Eastern Star will officiate at the
rites. Burial will follow in Auburn District
cemetery.

August Hackenberg - Funeral services will be
held tomorrow for August Hackenberg, a resident of San
Rafael Meadows, who died yesterday in a local hospital
after a long illness. He was 64. Hackenberg was a member
of Carpenters' union, Local No. 35, San Rafael. He is
survived by a brother, Herbert Hackenberg, also of San
Rafael Meadows. Funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m.

John M. Hecht, long a butcher in Marin county,
died yesterday at a local hospital after a long illness.
He was 70. A native of San Francisco, Hecht is survived
by a daughter, Mrs. Marguerite Brusatori of San Rafael,
and three sons, Arthur B. and Marston J. of San Rafael,
and Lester J. of Los Angeles. He was a member of Mt.
Tamalpais Parlor No. 64, N. S. G. W. and Butcher's Local
No. 115 of San Francisco. Hecht was a butcher in San
Rafael for many years and drove one of the first butcher
wagons in the county. Funeral services will be held at
9:15 a.m. Monday from Keaton's Mortuary, San Rafael.
Requiem mass will be celebrated at St. Raphael's church
at 9:30 a.m. Rosary services will be recited at the
Keaton Chapel at 8 p.m. Sunday. Interment will be in Mt.
Olivet Cemetery.

Mrs. Roxie Hillman, mother of Mrs. Theodore
Barron, House 685, died in Lufkin, Texas, last Thursday.
Mrs. Hillman who made her home with her daughter, left Marin
City about a month ago accompanied by her granddaughter,
Wyna Barron, to visit relatives in East Texas. The two were
preparing to return on the day Mrs. Hillman suddenly died as
a result if a heart attack. Mrs. Barron, accompanied by a
niece in San Francisco left by plane Friday morning to
attend the funeral at Lufkin, Texas.

Florence G. Hutton - Funeral services for
Florence G. Hutton, who died yesterday in Berkeley, will
be held Monday in the chapel of Edward E. Niehaus
Company, 1640 Grove Street, Berkeley. Mrs. Hutton, a
native of England, resided at 117 H street, San Rafael,
for many years. She was the widow if the late Andrew H.
Hutton. She died in her home at 2604 Woolsey, Berkeley,
following a long illness. Survivors include Miss J.
Hardy of Vancouver, B. C., Norman Hardy of Berkeley,
Mrs. R. E. Casborn of San Francisco, Mrs. J. Leeming of
Victoria, B. C. and E. W. Hardy of San Francisco. The
services will be officiated by Dr. Phillip Daunton.

H. Walter Johnson, 56, former mayor of Mill
Valley and for many years a city council member, died at
2:30 a.m. today at his home, 517 Throckmorton avenue,
Mill Valley. Johnson had been ill for four years of a
heart condition and just had been brought home Saturday
after a short hospital stay. Masonic funeral services
will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at American Legion
hall, Mill Valley. Legion memorial services will be held
at 8 p.m. tomorrow at Russell & Gooch memorial chapels.
Johnson came to Marin county from his native Oakland as
a boy and settled in Sausalito in 1906. In 1922 he moved
to Mill Valley and made his home there ever since. He is
survived by his wife, Alma; three children, Burbeck
Johnson, Belvedere, Lee Carl Johnson, Mill Valley, and
Kharvina Johnson, San Francisco; two step-children,
Roger Cauch, San Rafael, and Barbara Immel, Nevada City.
Flags on Mill Valley city hall and firehouse flew at
half staff today in his memory. He was elected to the
city council in 1932 and became the city's mayor in
1934. He was re-elected to the council for another
four-year term in 1936. After two years out of city
government he ran and was reelected in 1942 and again
became mayor in 1944. It was under his majority that the
Mill Valley tennis courts were built by the city.
Johnson started business for himself with two partners
in 1932 at the Locust Market, until his death operated
by himself and his son, Lee, as the Food Mart. He was a
graduate of Tamalpais High School and Stanford
University and had served in the Navy. He was a member
and past master of Mill Valley Lodge 356, F & A. M.;
first past commander of Mill Valley Post No. 284,
American Legion; past president of Locust Merchants
association.

Edward Judd, 40, a two-and-a-half year resident of
Sausalito, died yesterday in a San Francisco hospital after
a short illness. Judd is survived by his wife, Mrs. June
Judd; his mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Judd; two daughters, Pamela
and Emilie Judd; and two brothers, Allan Judd, Jr., and Boyd
Judd. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 8:45 a.m. at
Frank J. Keaton mortuary, Sausalito, and from there to Star
of Sea Church, Sausalito, where a requiem mass will be said.
Burial will be in Holy Cross cemetery, Colma. Rosary

Susan Marshall - Funeral services for Mrs. Susan
Marshall of Santa Rosa, formerly of Tomales and sister of

James McDowell, an early Marin county dairy rancher,
died Saturday at his ranch in Petaluma. He was 81 years old. A
native of Ireland, McDowell began dairy ranching at Ft. Reyes
from 1892 to 1905. After a trip back to Ireland, he settled at
Marshall from 1921 to 1927. He then moved to his present ranch
at Petaluma. Friends are invited to attend the funeral services
tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Parent Funeral chapel, 216 Washington
street, Petaluma. Interment will be at Cypress Hill Memorial
Park, Petaluma.

McInerney, Mrs. Mary Pratter, and Mrs. Grace Crowley; one son,

Albert L. Mirandette, 58, resident of San Rafael for 19
years, died yesterday in a local hospital following a long
illness. He was a native of France. A member of the Teamsters
Union, San Rafael and of the Lafayette club, Mirandette was
employed by a dairy company. He resided at 323 Bay View street.
He leaves his widow, Leontine Mirandette, and three daughters,
Mrs. Louis Tognoli, Mrs. Irvin Sousa, and Mrs. Stanley Bukowski.
He was the brother of Mrs. Francine Lannegran and Mrs. Jack
Jaymot. One grandson, Jeffery Sousa also survives. Funeral
services will be held Wednesday, 9:15 a.m. at Keaton's mortuary
followed by a requiem high Mass at St. Rapael's church.
Interment will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Recitation of the
rosary will take place tomorrow, 8 p.m. at the mortuary.

Hazel B. Murray of Palatine, Illinois
Graveside services for Hazel B. Murray (nee Burnette) 91
formerly of Greenbrae, Calif., will be held at 11 a.m. today, at St. Joseph Cemetery, Prairie de Rocher, Ill.
Born May 27, 1908, in Leesville, Va., she died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at ManorCare in Arlington Heights. Mrs.
Murray was a professor at the University of Maryland where she taught home economics. Hazel worked at the Department
of Agriculture Beltsville Research Station and carried out some of the pioneering research on frozen foods. She
was secretary of the Marin Art and Garden Society in Marin County, Calif.
Survivors include her son, Richard C. (Linda) Murray of Palatine; grandchildren, Catherine Michelle Murray of Palatine
and Michael R. Murray of Palatine; brother, Mahlon A. II (Alda) Burnette of Leesville; sisters-in-law, Dorothy
Burnette of Amelia Courthouse, Va., Constance Dorsey of Crestwood, Mo. and K. Patricia (Theodore) Pasquesi of Lake
Bluff; and brother-in-law, Sir John Ford of London, England. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard
C. Murray; and son, J. Michael Murray.

Irving C. Nelson, a former San Rafael resident died
yesterday at an Oakland hospital after an operation. Nelson,
who was in his sixties, spent most of his life in Marin
before moving to Danville about 15 years ago. He owned a
contracting business in San Rafael and made his home on Park
avenue. The deceased is survived by his wife, Chestine, who
was a member of Order of Eastern Star when she lived in
Marin. They had one son, Milton, who was killed in action
during World War II. Funeral arrangements have not yet been
set.

Silvio Paini - Funeral services will be held
tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. at Keaton's mortuary, San Rafael,
for Silvio Paini, 31, lifelong resident of Marin, who
died in his home in Woodacre today following a long
illness. Paini, who was born in San Rafael and moved to
Woodacre two years ago, worked for San Geronimo Water
Company. He was a veteran of World War II and was a past
president of Mt. Tamalpais Parlor No. 64, N. S. G. W.
Paini is survived by his wife, Mrs. Beverly Paini; his
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anselmo Paini, San Rafael; and a
brother, Louis Paini of Los Angeles. Services will be
conducted under the auspices of Mt. Tamalpais Parlor No.
64, N. S. G. W. Burial will follow in Golden Gate
National cemetery.

Attilio Louis Pellascio - Funeral services are
pending today at Sorenson's chapel, Petaluma, for
Attilio Louis Pellascio, Valley Ford, who died of a
heart attack Monday near Fallon. He was 63. Pellascio
had been fishing in Stemple Creek with his brother Henry
before he died. An autopsy performed by Marin Coroner
Frank Keaton revealed the cause of death as a heart
attack. He is survived by two brothers, Charles and
Henry Pellascio; and three sisters, Jenny Pellascio,
Mrs. Arnold Garzoli and Mrs. Lucy Cadjew.

Isaac "Bud" Rains, 70, of 546 D street, San Rafael, a
Marin resident for 47 years, died yesterday at a local
hospital after a short illness. A native of Petaluma, Rains
spent 30 years of continuous service as an employee of
Pacific Gas & Electric company in San Rafael. Rains was an
active member in San Rafael Elks Lodge No. 1108 and played
in the lodge orchestra for many years. He leaves his wife,
Sarah; a son, Marvyn; a sister, Blanche Mullins; two
grandchildren, Richard and Michael Rains. Funeral services
will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Keaton's mortuary, San
Rafael.

Mrs. Novella Robinson, once a resident of Marin City,
died Monday, August 27 at her home in Austin, Texas. Those
surviving her in Marin City are one daughter, Mrs. Louise
Wallace, and four sons, Salem, Frank, Booker T. and William.
Salem and Mrs. Frank Robinson left Wednesday morning, August 29,
for Austin to attend the funeral.

Irene M. Rogers - Funeral services will be held tomorrow
for Mrs. Irene M. Rogers, a six year resident of San Rafael who
died Saturday in a local rest home after a long illness. She was
54. Mrs. Rogers, was an active worker for Goodwill Industries,
serving as Marin county representative of the group before her
illness. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert Konrath,
Ogden, Utah; and Miss Shirley Rogers, San Rafael; a son, Le Roy
Rogers, Ogden, Utah; two sisters, Mrs. P. H. McFadden, Grants
Pass, Ore., and Mrs. Homer Stevens, of Oakland; a brother,
Marvin Payne, Richmond; and one grandson, Robert Konrath, Jr.

Karl Schmalfeld, a 26-year resident of
Larkspur, died suddenly last night at his home as a result of a
heart attack. He was 57. Schmalfeld was a native of Germany and for
many years a proprietor of a grocery store in Larkspur. He is
survived by a sister, Mrs. Henrietta Vogt, and brother-in-law,
Engelbert Vogt, also of Larkspur, and a nephew, Herbert Schmalfeld
of San Leandro. Funeral services will be held Monday, 11 a.m. at the
Guy Jenness Mortuary in San Anselmo. Interment will be at Mt.

Raymond Neil Sepulveda, former San Rafael
resident who has been living at 30 Mar East in
Tiburon for the past year, died early yesterday
at the home of his wife, Imgard, in Santa Rosa.
He suffered a sudden heart attack while in Santa
Rosa to enroll his son in school. Sepulveda was
born Sept. 30, 1906. About four years ago, he
moved to San Rafael, where he was employed as an
accountant. He is survived by his wife and three
children, David, Carol Ann, and Antionette.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m.
at Lafayette Smith, 415 B street, Santa Rosa.

Carl E. Sirard, a 50-year resident of San
Rafael, died today in a local hospital after a short
illness. He was 61. Sirard came to San Rafael late
in 1900 from Grass Valley where he was born. In
Marin he became a contractor engaged in roofing and
building trades. Funeral director Harry Williams
reported an autopsy was scheduled to be performed
this afternoon by Drs. John Manwaring and Rafael
Dufficy Jr. Sirard is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mae
Sirard; two sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Prescott, and Mrs.
Camille Tirguerio; and two brothers, Frank and
George Sirard. Funeral services will be held at 11
a.m. Thursday at Harry M. Williams mortuary, San
Rafael. Burial will be in Mount Olivet cemetery.

Svente N. Soderblom - A military burial in the
National Cemetery in Presidio of San Francisco was to be
held today for Captain Svente N. Soderblom, USA retired
veteran of Spanish-American War who died in his home in
San Anselmo Friday after a short illness. He was 81.
Soderblom came to California from Sweden in 1889 where
he enlisted in the Army at the Presidio of San Francisco
in 1892. He saw service with the army during the
Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection, and World
War I. Captain Soderblom was past president of the
Swedish Club of San Francisco, a member of the
Scandinavian Civic League, United Spanish War Veterans,
and Colonel Laghry Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and
the American Legion. He is survived by his wife,
Charlotte, a daughter, Mrs. Phillip J. Webster, of
Berkeley; and two grandchildren, Mrs. John William
Haynes, of Berkeley, and Valerie Webster. Funeral
services were set to be held at 2:30 p.m. today at
Halsted and company funeral directors in San Francisco.

Edna B. Thompson - Funeral services and
interment will be held in Portland, Oregon for Mrs.
Edna B. Thompson of San Anselmo who died yesterday
in a local hospital after an extended illness. Mrs.
Thompson, a native of Canada, was 70 years old, and
had lived in San Anselmo for the past six years. She
leaves her husband Ole Thompson, a retired
businessman. A sister, Mrs. A. B. Root and two
nieces, Mrs. R. A. Bonnett and Virginia Root, all of
San Francisco also survive. Keaton's mortuary is in
charge of arrangements.

Gregory Thompson - Funeral services were held
yesterday for Gregory Thompson, three day-old son of Mr.
and Mrs. Wilbur Thompson, San Rafael, who died August 31
in a local hospital. He is survived by his parents.
Funeral services were held at Keaton's mortuary, San
Rafael. Burial was in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Gregory Frederick Thompson, dearly beloved infant son of
Wilber Ted and Mary Lillis Thompson; a native of San
Rafael; aged three days. Funeral services were held

Rafael. Interment Mt. Olivet cemetery, San Rafael.

Effie D. Whitman - A 17 - year resident of
Marin county, Mrs. Effie D. Whitman, 86, died Monday
night in a Sausalito convalescent home. A native of
Wisconsin, she lived with her husband, the late
Albert L. Whitman, San Anselmo, until his death two
years ago. She is survived by one son, Neill Whitman
of Winchester Bay, Oregon, and three grandchildren -
Mrs. Jack Sparrow of Novato, Mrs. Robert Bruce of
Richmond, and Neill Whitman Jr., of Fairfax. Funeral
services are Thursday 3:30 p.m., at the Harry M.
Williams Mortuary, San Rafael. Interment, Mt.
Tamalpais Cemetery.
