The Pioneer Card Index is a index that covers all the names that are
in the Pioneer Card File at the California State History Library in
Sacramento. The Pioneer Card File consists of biographical information
on Californians who arrived before, after, and during the gold rush.
Dates vary. The information was contributed
by the pioneers themselves or by their direct descendants. Copies of
these files can be obtained at the State Library by visiting. If you are
unable to visit, you may contact a volunteer to obtain it for you.

Please Note:
While this index
is in alphabetical order, the order of the actual Pioneer Record Cards
at the State Library isn’t as precise. Therefore, it is recommended that
any search at the library extend to the surrounding cards if the card
sought isn’t in its proper place. It also should be noted that for the
women pioneers some are listed under their married names, some under
their maiden names, and some under both surnames. This index includes
only the name under which a California Pioneer Record card was prepared.
