GREAT REGISTER OF VOTERS

Record Description : Due to the Registry Act in 1866, all counties had to produce a register of each districts voters to help  prevent voter fraud. An 1872 law required counties to publish an index or alphabetical listing of all registered voters every two years. These lists were kept by the county clerk and eventually were  printed in even-numbered years. Some counties did every year .These lists became the Great Register of Voters. These registers are great census substitutes however, they do not contain women as they could not vote until 1911. They can contain characteristics and also naturalization data.
