| DEMERON, W.J. News came from the coast of the death of another early day Kansan when Mrs. W. J. Demeron died on Dec. 24 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Pearl Clarke at Edgewood, Cal., with whom she had made her home for .several years Mr. and Mrs. Demeron came to Kansas about 65 years ago and lived on the farm near McFarland until Mr. Demeron's death some years ago. Mrs. Demeron continued on the farm a few years and then went to California. She was born in Burr Oak, Mich, in 1839 and would have been 89 years old on Feb. 19. She leaves two children, Mrs. Pearl Clarke of Edgewood, Cal., and Dr. W. L. Demeron of Murrieta Hot Springs, Cal. She was buried at Weed, Cal. Mrs. Demeron was an exceptionally capable woman and had a wide circle of friends here who will grieve at the news of her death. Alma, Wabaunsee County, Kansas Friday January 6, 1928 Submitted by Candi H. HOERTLING, MYRTLE OREON nee KLOSS Mrs. Myrtle O. Hoertling, a resident of McCloud, died March 11th in Mercy Care Center of natural causes. She was 89. She was born October 1, 1908 in Elk Grove and moved to Siskiyou County in 1937 from Elk Grove. She was a high school teacher in Elk Grove before moving to Siskiyou County. She was affiliated with the Siskiyou County Library in McCloud. She is survived by her husband Phillip C. Hoertling of McCloud; her sons Gerald E. Hoertling of McCloud, Myron K. Hoertling of Elk Grove, and Phillip W. Hoertling of Yreka; her daughter Elizabeth O. Pelletier of Mount Shasta; and three grandchildren. Services were held on March 14th at Mount Shasta Memorial Chapel with Pastor Robert Meyer officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice. Mount Shasta Herald, 3/25/1998 HOERTLING, PHILLIP Phillip Christian Hoertling, a resident of McCloud, died of natural causes on March 29, 2000 at Mercy Medical Center in Mount Shasta. He was 95. He was born September 29, 1904 in Point Pleasant, CA. He was raised and worked on a small dairy farm in south Sacramento County attending school in the Elk Grove area. He came to Siskiyou County in 1926 to work for the McCloud River Lumber Company. He initially worked at a lumber camp in the Hambone area on a donkey crew. A short time later, he worked as a blacksmith's assistant. During the transition from steam donkey log yarding to gas and diesel logging, he became a heavy equipment mechanic, a "cat-doctor." He was also a welder and heavy equipment operator. He married in 1937 and lived in Pondosa where he raised four children. He moved to McCloud in 1964. He used his blacksmithing skills to create a large variety of wrought-iron tables, lamps, candelabra, andirons, planters, and plates. He also enjoyed gardening and the outdoors. Mr. Hoertling continued to work after his retirement from the lumber company in 1969. His last job was with the Forest Service in McCloud which he left in 1989 at the age of 85. He was affiliated with McCloud Masonic Lodge #430 F & AM. Survivors include his sons Gerald Hoertling of McCloud, Myron Hoertling of Elk Grove, and Phillip Hoertling of Yreka; a daughter Elizabeth Pelletier of Mount Shasta; a brother Elmer Hoertling of El Cerrito; and three grandchildren. Memorial services were held April 1st at McCloud Community Presbyterian Church with Pastor Robert Meyer officiating. Burial is at Mount Shasta Memorial Park.
