About Fremont County

Founded November 1, 1861
Seat: Cañon City
Largest city: Cañon City

The county is named for explorer and presidential candidate John C. Frémont.

Fremont County was founded as one of the original counties in Colorado. In 1877 the county was split to add Custer County. It is home to many of the state's prisons. The first territorial prison was built in Fremont County in 1871. In October of 1929 the Colorado State Penitentiary had the biggest riot in its history.

Like many other places in Colorado, Fremont County was no stranger to mining. It was home to many mines, including Wolf Creek Park in Cañon City.
