Seat: Cañon City
county is named for explorer and presidential candidate John C.
County was founded as one of the original counties in Colorado.
In 1877 the county was split to add Custer
County. It is home to many of the state's prisons. The first
territorial prison was built in Fremont County in 1871. In
October of 1929 the Colorado State Penitentiary had the biggest
riot in its history.
many other places in Colorado, Fremont County was no stranger to
mining. It was home to many mines, including Wolf Creek Park in
