A Woman City Treasurer
Miss Smiley, who has just been elected city treasurer of
Montrose, Colo., resigns a place as head clerk in one of the largest dry goods
houses in the city to accept the office. She received her nomination through the
efforts of the Woman's Political club, indorsed, however, by some of the leading
business men of the place.

Hotel Guest Burned to Death
Montrose, Colo., June 10-The Montrose hotel, a two story
frame building, and a block of stores have been burned. Robert H. Mead, aged 65
years, of Portland, Colo., a guest of the hotel, burned to death. A dozen other
guests were rescued uninjured. The fire is believed to have been of incendiary
origin.

His wife, nee Miss Alice Conner, died two years ago and their little son, Fleete, is with his relatives, Mr. and Mrs. King Thompson, of Byesville. He will return to his home in the west in July. He is also interested in mining property.

DRINK COSTS HIM $100
Offers Whiskey Flask to Friend in Colorado Town and Is Arrested.
Montrose, Colo., June 4-It cost ?.H. Clark $100 to treat a
friend to a drink of whiskey here. Extracting a flask from his pistol pocket, he
presented it to the friend on a street corner, was immediately arrested and
fined $100. This is the first conviction under the prohibition regulation
adopted in many Colorado towns at the April elections.

Montrose, Colo., Jan.-A marital longevity race is the latest
curl in marathons in Colorado.
Since the holidays, three Montrose couples have celebrated
marriage anniversaries of more than 50 years. Three couples are tied for first
place as Mr. and Mrs. George Nash, Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Baily and Justice and Mrs.
John Blanchard each celebrated their 57th anniversary.
In addition to the leaders, Mr. and Mrs. G.M. Prickett
completed 51 years of married bliss, and Mr. and Mrs. E.P. Leonard held their
golden wedding celebration.

Shriek-Death
Woman Hears Shriek and Moan-Then Learns of Death of Mother.
Montrose, Colo., Jan. 11-A psychic experience was related
here today by Mrs. William Francis.
Mrs. Francis said that about noon yesterday she suddenly
became highly nervous. Near 1 o'clock, she heard clearly a shriek and moan.
At 4 p.m. Mrs. Francis received a telegram from Myerstown,
Pa., informing her mother had died at about the same time she heard the shriek
and moan.

road near here for a car of a certain description, and halted it when it
appeared. The car was driven by Sheriff Israel of Ouray, whose friends were
