Gertrude A. Beers


Stamford - Mrs. Gertrude A. Beers, 90, mother of Arthur T. Nettleton, treasurer of the Newtown Savings Bank and the late Norman C. Beers of Danbury, former prosecutor of that city, died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Susie F. Judd, 1015 Summer Street.  Beside her son and daughter, she is survived by one other son, Joseph Nettleton of New Milford; two granddaughters, Mary Gerturde Beers and Virginia Ferre Beers, all of Danbury and two grandsons, Arthur Nettleton Judd of Stamford and Howard P. Nettleton of New Milford.

Barbara Chontos


Obit: Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Chontos will be held this afternoon at 1:45 o'clock at the late home, 10 Pleasant street, and at 2:30 o'clock at the Hungarian Reformed church in Lexington avenue.  Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Mrs. Northrop Clarey, Sr.

A  memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 P.M. in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Fairfield for Mrs. Northrop Clarey, Sr. of Westport, who died March 22.

She was the wife of the late Northrup Clarey.  At the time of her death, Mrs. Clarey was a few days short of her 93rd birthday.  

A son, Northrup Clarey, Jr. of Westport, survives.

John Louis Elwood, 85 year old Civil War veteran, died Friday in North Adams, Mass.  The remains were brought here [Norwalk] today and funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock today at the Soldiers Home Noroton.  Interment will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.

William Fagan

Funeral services for William Fagan were held at 8:30 o'clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frances Corcoran, 6 Jefferson Street and at 9 o'clock at St. Mary's Church.  Rev. Raymond J. Clabby officiated at the church and also at the interment in St. Mary's Cemetery.  The pallbearers were John Clune, Edward O'Brien, Frederick Steeb and Charles McMullen.

Edward Farrell

Edward Farrell, formerly of this city, died Saturday in the Sacramento, Calif. hospital, word to that effect having  been telegraphed to relatives here on that date.  The deceased was 46 years of age.  He resided in California for about 12 years.  The body has been shipped east for burial and is expected to arrive in this city by Sunday.  

When a resident of Norwalk, Mr. Farrell was engaged in the plumbing business. He had a large number of friends in Norwalk who will be surprised to learn of his demise.  

Mr. Farrell is survived by seven sisters and two brothers.  They are Mrs. John Lawlor of Bridgeport, Mrs. William Horricks of California, Mrs. William McCann, Mrs. Margaret Pierce, Mrs. Walter Rose, Miss Edna Farrell and William and Lester Farrell, all of Norwalk.

Leon J. Garr

Funeral services for Leon J. Garr, who died suddenly Wednesday morning were held Thursday in Temple Beth El.  Rabbi Jonas Goldberg officiated, assisted by Rabbi Jacob Lantz and Cantor Emil Hager.  Attorney Abraham D. Slavitt delivered the eulogy.

Interment took place in Bethel El Memorial Park with committal prayer by Rabbi Goldberg, assisted by Rabbi Lantz and Cantor Hager.  Honorary bearers were Mr. Slavitt, Charles Sachs, Holly Seely, Bernard Roston.  Active bearers were John Mulqueen, Cliff Ellis, Jesse Brill, Steven Zangrillo, Peter Zangrillo, Robert Heim, Ralph Katz, Dr. Samuel Harris.

Mr. Garr was the husband of Celeste Yale Garr of Apple Tree lane.  Born in New York city, he had resided in Norwalk for 29 years and was a certified public accountant and attorney with offices in Darien.  He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II, a member of Connecticut and New York Societies of CPA’s, New York State Bar Association and was licensed to practice in U.S. Tax Court, New York Supreme Court, U.S. District Court Eastern District of New York.

A past president of the Darien Chamber of Commerce, he had held various offices in fraternal organizations.

Arrangements were in charge of Collins Funeral Home.

Kelsey B. Gould

Funeral services for Kelsey B. Gould, 55, who committed suicide at his home in Good Hill Road, Weston Friday night, will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday in Coldwell, N.J.   The remains will be sent to Coldwell early Tuesday.  There will be no services in Weston or Westport.  The burial will be in Coldwell.

Josephine McNiven Griswold

Services were held Thursday in the Raymond Funeral Home, 5 East Wall street, Norwalk, for Mrs. Josephine McNiven Griswold, 84 of 15 Spring Hill avenue, Norwalk, who died March 24th in Elmcrest Health Care Center, Norwalk.

Ellsworth Bedell, senior warden of Christ Episcopal Church, officiated.  Interment was in the family plot in Riverside Cemetery, Norwalk.  She was the widow of Charles D. Griswold.

George Lockwood


George C. Lockwood Dies of Pneumonia

George C. Lockwood, member of an old Norwalk family died yesterday afternoon in his home in High Street from pneumonia.  Mr. Lockwood was a familiar figure in Norwalk and had a host of friends who learned of his death with regret.

Mr. Lockwood was stricken by heart trouble on a recent western trip.  Upon his return, he was confined to his home.  Pneumonia followed, causing his death.

Mr. Lockwood is survived by his wife, Rafaella B. Lockwood.  Funeral services and interment will be private and friends have been asked to omit flowers.  

Mr. Lockwood at one time was quite a large property  owner in Norwalk, among his holdings being the old Norwalk Hotel at the corner of Wall and River Street, which he successfully conducted for some time. He was also connected with the E.K. Lockwood Plumbing and Household Supply Store in Wall Street, the head of the firm being his uncle.

Kathleen C. McMahon

Mrs. McMahon Dies, Hospital

Wife of Edward McMahon Succumbs After An Illness of Six Weeks; Was Stamford Teacher.

Kathleen C., wife of Edward M. McMahon of this city passed away early Saturday evening at the Norwalk Hospital.

Mrs. McMahon had been critically ill since the birth of a daughter six weeks ago.  Mrs. McMahon is a daughter of Mrs. Cornelius P. O'Leary of Brewer, Maine.  She was until her marriage a year ago, a teacher in Stamford High school.

Besides her husband, she is survived by her six week old daughter, Kathleen Mary, her mother, Mrs. Cornelius P. O'Leary, three sisters, Elizabeth, Cornelia and Alma O'Leary and one brother, C. Howard O'Leary, all of Brewer, Maine.

The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. from the home of Mr. McMahon's mother, Mrs. John McMahon, 224 West avenue and at 9 o'clock from St. Joseph's Church.  Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Louise Shafranek

Services for Mrs. Louise Schlosser Shafranek of 18 Hazel Street who died Tuesday after a long illness will be held Thursday at 11 A.M. from the Raymond Funeral Home, 5 Wall Street.  Dr. Howard B. Warren of the East Avenue Methodist Church will officiate and burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery.   Friends may call at the funeral home today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9.

Ophir Chapter OES will conduct services tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.  The Norwalk Emblem Club will hold services there at 8.  Monker Cauldron Daughters of Mckanna will meet this evening at 7 o'clock at the funeral home to pay their respects in a body.

Catherine Tuttle Stack

Mrs. Catherine Tuttle Stack, a former resident of this city died Friday night at her home in Long Branch, N.J.  The deceased was 64 years old.  She is survived by her husband, William Stack and one son, John Tuttle of this city.  Funeral services will be held this Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the home of her son at 14 Taylor Avenue. Rev. Phillips Brooks Warner, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church will officiate.  Burial will be in the family plot in Pine Island Cemetery.  

The deceased is also survived by three sisters, Miss Durmoody, Mrs. M. O'Neil and Mrs. E. Moore, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Otto G. Stietzel

Otto Gottliab Stietzel, 80, of 6 Lancaster Drive, Norwalk, died Thursday in Norwalk Hospital.  

He was the husband of Alma Zinser Stietzel. Born in Redding, he resided in Norwalk 51 years.  He was a veteran of World War I, having served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Germany and France.  He received the Good Conduct Medal.

Mr. Stietzel is a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Norwalk where he held every church office and had been a member of the voting body, usher and a member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League.  He was the vice president of the H and S Dump Trucking Inc. Norwalk and was also superintendent of Superior Casting Corps.

He is survived by, in addition to his wife, two sons, Otto L. Stietzel of Norwalk and Ronald Stietzel of Sturbridge, Mass., two daughters, Mrs. Herbert F. (Linnea) Holtz of Bridgeport and Mrs. William A. (Christine) Day of Norwalk; two brothers, Dr. Eric E. Stietzel of Norwalk and Walter E. Stietzel of Florida; a sister, Mrs. Anna Wagner of Danbury and eight grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 P.M. in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Norwalk with Rev. Oscar Milke, pastor, officiating.  Interment will be in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Danbury.  Friends may call at the Raymond Funeral Home, 5 East Wall street, Norwalk, this evening from 7 to 9 and Saturday from 10 A.M. to noon.  Instead of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Newtown Avenue, Norwalk.

Joseph T. Marks

Funeral services for Joseph T. Marks, who died suddenly Tuesday in Norwalk Hospital were held Thursday morning in the Collins Funeral Home.  Rev. William Laughlin of St. Philip’s Church officiated.  Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Mr. Marks was the husband of Eleanor Britton Marks of 56 Wolfpit avenue.  Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had been a Norwalk resident for 10 years, was an employee of the Purdue Frederick Company and a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

Salvatore Cuda

The funeral services of Salvatore Cuda, 88, of Irving Freese apartments, Norwalk, will take place Saturday at 9 A.M. in the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott avenue, Norwalk, followed by a mass of Christian burial at 9:30 in St. Philip’s Church.

Burial will be in St. John Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M.

Mr. Cuda, the husband of Amelia Mastroiana Cuda, died Thursday in Danbury Pavilion Health Care Center.

Nettie A. Slauson

Services will be conducted Saturday at 10:45 A.M. in the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott avenue, Norwalk for Mrs. Nettie A. Slauson, 68, of 13 Cottage street, East Norwalk, wife of the late Chester Slauson.  Mrs. Slauson died Wednesday in Norwalk Hospital after a brief illness.

Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 P.M.

She was a lifelong resident of Norwalk and was employed as a nurse’s aide in the Elmcrest Health Care Center in Norwalk.

Grace Tapley

Obit: Miss Grace M. Tapley of Belden Hill, Wilton, died Saturday morning at her home.  The remains were sent to Brooklyn, N.Y. by Director Raymond and Sons for burial.  Services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Fairchild Chapel in Brooklyn.

Betsy Andronaco Vandall

Longtime New Canaan Resident

Betsy Andronaco Vandall, a longtime resident of New Canaan, died October 3, 2008 at Norwalk Hospital after a five year battle with Leiomyosarcoma.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 in St. Aloysius Church, New Canaan at 10:00 AM.  Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends at the Hoyt Funeral Home, 199 Main Street, New Canaan, on Monday, October 6, 2008 from 3 - 8 PM.

Norman D. Whiston

Norman D. Whiston, 63, of High Ridge road, Redding Ridge, died Wednesday in Danbury Hospital.

Born in Omaha, Neb. July 25, 1913 he resided in Redding since 1965.  He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Redding Ridge. He was a 1939 graduate of the University of Nebraska with a B.S. in civil engineering.  A World War II veteran of the Army Air Force, he served as a pilot instructor.  He had been a pilot with Eastern Air Lines for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Bernice McManus Whiston of Redding Ridge; a son, Richard Whiston of Redding; a brother, Dr. Gordon Whiston of Sunset City, Ariz.; and one nephew.

The funeral was held today in Christ Episcopal Church, Redding Ridge, with Rev. Randall C. Giddings officiating.  Interment will be in Umpawaug Cemetery, Redding at the convenience of the family.
