He was 77.A lifelong resident of Lecanto, Mr. Allen belonged to a number of civic organizations and held several elected offices in Citrus County. He was the owner of Horace Allen Fill Dirt of Lecanto and lived on a 620-acre ranch.He loved the land, life and what farming stood for," his daughter, Margie Haley, said Monday. "There's nothing more Daddy loved than to plant a seed and watch it grow or to watch a calf being born."During the 1980s, when Citrus County farmers were selling thousands of acres to developers who built golf courses and subdivisions, Mr. Allen was one of the farmers who refused to sell their land.He served on the Citrus County School Board for 16 years, from 1958 to 1974. During that time, the county experienced a population explosion that required new schools and more teachers. One School Board member, Phil Zellner, said Mr. Allen was among the most respected leaders on the School Board."Horace was probably one of the most honest men I've ever known. If Horace told you something, you could write it down. He was a conservative old farmer-boy from Lecanto. He worked hard all his life."Mr. Allen was a member of Trinity Community Church in Lecanto.
