GEORGE WASHINGTON McCLELLAND

1853 - ca1895

George Washington McClelland was born December 24, 1853 to Gabriel J. McClelland and Lydia Ann (Smith) McClelland. Gabriel J. McClelland was the son of Silas and Penelope McClelland. He enlisted as a private in Captain Sparkman's Company in the Third Seminole Indian War February 18, 1856, and he died in service at Camp Station July 8, 1857 from typhoid fever. Lydia Ann was the daughter of George W. and Caroline Smith. After Gabriel's death, Lydia Ann applied for a widow's pension March 23, 1859, and was awarded one at the rate of $5.50 per month. She drew this pension until she remarried Allen D. Douglas January 12, 1860.

After her remarriage, the pension of $5.50 per month was awarded to George W. McClelland, and Baxter M. Smith was appointed his guardian, July 11, 1860. George did not live with his mother, but was raised by his grandparents, George W. and Caroline Smith. He was living in their household in 1860 and 1870 census of Hillsborough County, Florida. George W. McClelland was one of the heirs in George W. Smith's will, July 28, 1869, probated February 21, 1873.

George Washington McClelland and Georgia Anne Davis applied for a marriage license December 11, 1871 to Clerk of Court, Hillsborough County, Florida and it was issued. There is no record of it being returned to that office, so it may be assumed that the official who performed the ceremony failed to return it. Georgia Anne was born October 5, 1852 in Alabama. Her parents are not known. To them were born the following children:

1. Mary V. McClelland, born 1874; married H. D. Mann, December 23, 1890.

2. Fanny Marion McClelland, born December 10, 1876; died May 8, 1893; buried New Hope Cemetery, Fort Meade, Florida.

3. George Washington McClelland, born January 28, 1879; died June 25, 1962; buried Oak Hill Cemetery, Lakeland, Florida; married Nona Rushing.

4. William J. McClelland, born March 1881; married Lula Elizabeth Huckaby.

5. Lydia Anne McClelland, born January 1883.

6. Sarah W. McClelland, born January 1885.

7. Georgia Anne McClelland, born January 1887.

8. Hubert or Hubbard McClelland, born November 1890.

In 1880 the family was living in Manatee County (now Hardee) near New Hope Baptist Church, east of present day Wauchula, Florida, and according to the 1880 census of Manatee County, Florida, George was a farmer. Prior to 1890 the family moved to Polk County, near Fort Meade, Florida. The 1900 census of Polk County shows Georgia Anne McClelland, a widow, as head of the household. Apparently George W. McClelland died prior to 1900 census as no record of his death or grave had been found.

Georgia Anne McClelland died January 1, 1910 and was buried in New Hope Cemetery, west of Fort Meade, Florida.
