Originally part of Escambia and later Gadsden County, Leon County
was created in 1824. It was named for Juan Ponce de León, the
Spanish explorer who was the first European to reach Florida. During
the 1850s - 1860s, Leon County was a "cotton kingdom" and
ranked 5th out of all of Florida and Georgia counties in the production
of cotton from the 20 major plantations.
The principal place in Leon County is Tallahassee, the county seat
and state capital. The community name derives from Muskogean for "old
town" or "old fields"
Other communities include:
Miccosukee -- Ochlockonee -- Woodville

Our goal at Genealogy Trails is to transcribe and post genealogical
source data so that family researchers can track their ancestors through
time, throughout the country.
This website needs a dedicated host to make it the best that it can
be!
If you think that you may be interested in volunteering to host a county
or state please view our Volunteer
Information page here and email
Kim.
(A desire
to transcribe data and the know-how to make a basic webpage is required)
Join our mailing
lists for researchers looking to connect and share information.
You never know who you might meet and what family data they may share
with you -- it could start a whole new branch of the family!
We also use the mailing lists to announce our website updates. Florida
is covered under the South-Eastern Region Mailing List
Remember to look around at the other
states and consider donating your source information -- every
little bit helps someone.
