Nassau County, situated in the northeastern corner of the State, contains about 645 square miles, or 412,800 acres. It is bounded on the north and west by the St. Mary's River, a stream navigable for nearly sixty miles by ocean going vessels; on the south by Nassau River, a stream with equal navigation possibilities, and on the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Nassau County was created in 1824 from Duval County. It was named for the Duchy of Nassau in Germany.
