1850 - 1851
These minutes of the Salem Baptist Church at Ichepucksassa, Fla. were contributed by Kyle S. VanLandingham, from an old notebook at Polk Co. Hist. Library at Bartow. The old notebook is believed to have belonged to William R. Hollingsworth, Chuch Clerk of Salem Church. The handwriting matches other available samples of his writing.
We having been constituted as a Church upon a profession of our faith have given our selves to God and to one another individually and collectively keeping up a godly dicipline and to watch over each other for good endeavering to help each other in every Godly matter as a Church of Christ.
A Decorum for Salem Church
Article 1: The regular conference meetings of this Church shall be held on satchurday(sic) before the forth sabbath in each month and at such other times as the church may think propper and the conference of this church shall be composed of not less than three ordinary male members of this church all all the Conferences of this church shall be opened and closed by divine worship.
Article 2: This church shal anuly call some Baptist Minister of this to the Pastoral care of the church for the term of one year.
Article 3: At each conferance meeting of the church ther shal be a moderator appointed if the Pastor is not present who if present shal act as moderator and it shal be the duty of the Moderator to open a door in the Church for the reception of members who it is thought propper to invite visiting Bretheren to seats with us - - consider themselves in good - - at home. to explain and put question and to take votes but shal not vote except the boddy present be equally divided.
Article 4: In taking the votes on any matter in the church A majority shal rule except cases touching fellowship and thal be unanimous.
Article 5: Each brother in debaiting on any subject in the conferances of this church shal rise from his seat and address the Moderator under the appellation of - - Moderator, " and shal not be interrupted while speking unless he departs from the subject in debate.
Article 6: it is the duty the members of this church to attend the regular meetings monthly the Male members especially and if any male member of the church shall fail to attend the regular monthly meetings of this church for _______ times in succession one or more of the Deacons shal visit such defaulting member Privately and learn the (reasons) of such delinquincy and if the (reason is) thought good by the deacons no charges shal be brought against such defaulting brother otherwise the deacons shall cite the default in brother to attend the next conferance for the church to judge of the case.
Article 7: This shall be decorum for this church subject to be altered or amended as the Majority of the church may think propper but this church shal have a Clerk who shal keep a fair record of all the Proceedings of the meetings of conferences of this church and it shal be duty of the Clerk of this church to read the decorum at least quarterly, or any other person insted of the clerk who may be authorised to do so.
Echopochsas, Hillsborough County, South Florida October 15 1850.
At an appointment of the above named place and time by Elders JOHN TUCKER and DANIEL SIMMONS after divine worship inquiry was made into the Propriety of the baptist in this vicinity being Constituted in to a church and all members of the Baptist order Present who consider themselves in order being found orthodox and in ful fellowship with each other agreed to be constituted into a church upon the articles of faith represented in the minits of the Alachua Association and the aboved named ministers of the Gospel havve prounounst them a church of Christ cald Salem after the church constituted. Proceeded to the election of a deacon for this church which resulted in the ellection of brother STEPHEN HOLLINGSWORTH and after the charge and ordination of the Deacon the church Proceeded to the call of a pastor and Elder JOHN TUCKER was cald for remaining part of this year, and the next year, which call Brother TUCKER accepted then after an exhortation a door of the church was opend for reception of members when P. JOHN ROLLISON and SAMUEL VARNS who receivd on a profession of grace to be babtised tomorrow agreed in church conference to have the sacrament of the lords supper administered to the church this evening and to attend to the duty of feete washing of the saints then the congregation dismist to meete this evening as above stated at brother HOLLINGSWORTHs after singing and prayer the sacrament of the lords supper was administered with due solemnity after which the duty of the saints washing each others feete was performed then after an exhortation a dor was again opend for the reception of members when sister MARY BRYANT who have belonged to the Baptist denomination came forward and was rect in ful fellowship with the church having made the church satisfide that she was regularly babtized and have walked in order since. ordered in Conference the Clerk to prepair a petitionary letter to the alachua association and chose as our delegate WILLIAM HANCOCK and WILLIAM R. HOLINGSWORTH which letter was rote reach and receivd then after Prayr the congregation was dismissed til tomorrow to meete at the water for Baptism 16 met at the water according to adjournment and a door was opend for the reception of members when CIVILITY ROLLISON and MARTHA ANN BREWER presented themselves to the Church and was received on Professing and experience of grace and after divinie worship the ordinance of Baptism was administerd by brother TUCKER to the Candidates for baptism after which the Congregation retired to the meeting house to hear preching was performed by brother SIMMONS and an exhortation by brother TUCKER with apperant good effect after which the Meeting closed in good order.

Sudy November 17th 1850
Met according to previous appointment and after divine service Conference was opend motion was made and seconded that Brother J. M. Hayman act as moderator in this Conference Then a door was opened for the reception of members when Brother SAMUEL ROGERS and his wife MARGRET A. ROGERS came and was recd. by letter they not being present when the church was constituted whose names is in the letter of dismission from the Alafia Baptist Church then after Divine worship Conference Closed.
Thursday December 19 1850
Met according to previous appointment and after Preching (sic) by elder D. SIMMONS and exhortation by Elder J. TUCKER the conference of the church was opened also a door for the reception of members when Miss CEILY WHITTON and Miss LEVINA WHITTON and Miss NANCY RUSHING presented themselves and was received upon the profession of an experience of grace then after divine services ajournd until tomorrow to meet at the water side.

At the water side after After divine service and A fu remarks on the subject of babtism a doore of the church was opend for the reception of members when sister ELIZABETH CREWS who was formerly of the babtist order also her husband ISHAM CREWS her husband and was recd in ful fellowship with this Church and also sister PENELOPY McCLELAND who was receivd in ful fellowship with us who was formerly a babtist then after babtism Preching was performed at the water by brother TUCKER the meeting closed in good order.

Met according to our regular Appointment preching by brother TUCKER and exortation by Elder SIMMONS the Conferenc of the Church was opend also a door of the Church was opend for the reception of Members When Mrs. REBECCAR WHITTON Came forward and was receivd upon the profeshion of an experience of grace and also sister ROLLERSON who had bin formerly A member of the babtist church formerly having satisfide us and bin receivd in ful fellowship with us proceeded to the Election of another deacon for this church when Brother JOHN ROLLERSON was duly Alllected when his ordination was duly attended to by Chage by brother SIMMONS prair by Brother TUCKE Adjourned til tomorrow morning to meete at the water for babtism At a night meting held at brother HANCOCKs by brother J TUCKER a dor of the church was opend for the reception of members when brother WILLIAM BREWER came foward and was received on a profeshion of grace then after divine worship the meeting closed til tomorrow at 10 o clock to meete at the water for babtism.

Met at the water according to appointment for then after prair babtism was performed by brother TUCKER then after babtism ajourned for the meting house then after divine service the ordinence of the sacrament of the lords supper was performed with due solemnity after divince service meeting was closed in good order.

at a night meting held at MAXFIELD WHITTONs by Elder JAMES NEWTON the missionary appointed by this association then after divine service Conference was then opend and also door of the Church for the reception of members when Came foward brother MAXFIELD WHITTON and also his wife SOPHIA WHITTON who upon ther profeshion of grace was receivd to be babtized tomorrow at 10 o clock after which the meeting closed in good order.
March the 19 1851
Wednesday met at the water side according to appointment then after Prair a door of the Church was opend for the reception of members when Miss JANE WHITTON came forth and was rec'd on a profeshion of grace to babtised at some convenient season when brother MAXFIELD WHITTON and also sister SOPHIA WHITTON came foward and was babtised by the afforsaid J NEWTON then proceeded to the meting house wher preching was performd by the afforesaid J NEWTON with due solemnity then after preching a dor of the Church was again open for the reception of members and none came foward After which service closed in appearant good order.

At an appointment held by at Salem Church by brothers JOHN TUCKER and DANIEL SIMMONS after divine service Conference was then opend and also a dore of the Church was then opened for the reception of members then came foward brothers and sisters ELIZA WHITTON, WILOBY WHITTON, DAVID HANNON, MARY ANN FARLESS came foward and was receivd on a profesion of ther faith and an experience of grace to be babtised this evening at 4 oclock this evening
Met at the water side after divine service after remarks on the subject of babtism by J TUCKER then Conference was opend and also a doore of the Church was opend for the reception of members then Came foward sister JANE WHITTON to be batised who joind at the last meeting of brother J. NEWTON whose name will be found in our last minut of the aforemaned J. NEWTON then after baptism was performd by JOHN TUCKER and an exertion by thence closed to meete tomorrow at the Church.

At met present according to appointment preching was performd by brothers JNO TUCKER and DANIEL SIMMONS then after divine service Conference was then opend and also a dore of the Church was opend for the reception of members nome came forth thence the meeting closed in apperient good order.

BONY was Appointed Clerk Prot protem After which brother ISHAM CRUSE and sister ELIZABETH CRUSE handed in ther letter which was received also A motion was made by brother SIMMONS to extend an arm of this Church to the of WM. T. RUSHING which was agreed to the meetin then adjournd til tomorrow at 10 oclock which survises was opend by brother JERRY HAMONS first surmon preacht by Elder J. TUCKER and followd by Elder D. SIMMONS Conference was then opend brother BONEY Clerk Protem red the proceedings of the meeting as above mentiond the doore of the Church was then opend for the reception of members None came fourth the sacrament of the lords supper was administerd after which the doore of Church was again opend for the reception of members brother STEPHEN T. HOLLINGSWORTH and Sister ANN HOLLINGSWORTH presented themselves to the Church by giving a satisfactory experience was receivd by giving the right hand of fellowship the meeting again closed in apparent good order.

Servises opend by D. SIMMONS one sermond preacht an exortation by J. TUCKER the referd to the water for baptism brother S. T. HOLLINGSWORTH came foward and Sister ANN HOLLINGSWORTH and was baptised Meeting Closed by prayr.

Met present according to Appointment preching was performed by brother JERRY HAYMANS then after divine Service Conference was then opend and also a door of the church then opend for the reception of members None came foward Motion was made and seconded that we electe delegates to the next sociation brothers FREDRIC VAN, WM. HANCOCK, STEPHEN HOLLINGSWORTH, brother HAMANS Moderator After which the meeting Closed in good order.

Salem Church August the 22 1851
Met according to appointment preching was performed by Elder JOHN TUCKER and brother MAIN. Service commenst by brother MAIN and an exhortation by brother TUCKER after which Conferce Set in order No bisness before us brother J. TUCKER by Solicitation preching to nite at WM. T. RUSHINGS. At the indian pond after preching the doore of the church was opend for the reception of members one came foward to wit Sister ELIZABETH FRYER presented herself and was recd on a profeshion of an experience of grace by giving her the right hand of fellowship meting closed til tomorrow ten oclock.

Mete at the water, Sister ELIZABETH FRYER came foward and was baptised by brother TUCKER services of the day opend by brother MAIN also preching followd brother TUCKER confernce again Let a doore of the church was again opend for the reception of members none came fourth after which meeting closed in apperant good order.

At an appointment of brother JERRY HAMANS our minister not being present Motion was made and seconded that brother D. J. W. BONY act as moderator the case of brother W. BREWER presented brother WILOBY WHIDDEN came foward and Saith that he talked with the defaulting brother who denies the charge leged to him by the said brethren and saith he took drams and will again if he should happen when it be and he should not appear at the church until his name off of the church book motion was then made and seconded of the aforenamde brother be laid over til the first satchurday in November next motion was then made and seconded that three be appointed to talk with brother BREWER to see if ther can be reconsileation brother WILOBY WHIDDEN, STEPHEN HOLLINGSWORTH, WM. HANCOCK was appointed to see brother BREWER ajourned in good order.

Met persuant to the last Adjournment and after preching by brother HAMONS confernce was opend motion was made and seconded that brother HAYMAN act as moderator in this confernce a doore was then opend for the reception of members but none was receivd cald for report on the case of brother WILLIAM BREWER and brother STEPHEN HOLLINGSWORTH reported that he had see brother BREWER since the last confernce and BREWER declared to him that he never intendid to visit this church again until his name was eraste off of the church book and that he did not wish to be a member of the church, it was then put to vote whether he should be retained in the church or be expeld the vot was given unanimous by the members present that he be expeld from the church and be no more considered as a member of this church the church then agreed to send a petition to the Association when a presbytery can be had requesting the ordination of brother J. M. HAYMAN to the gospel Ministry then red corrected and approved the letter for this church to the Association the after divine service confernce closed in order.
