SARASOTA LITTLE LEAGUE FOUNDER FERREIRA DIES; ALSO SERVED AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AND HEAD COACH AT SARASOTA HIGH
Sarasota Herald Tribune
October 08, 1996 Byline: STAFF REPORT

In 1945, Ted Ferreira was just one of several thousand veterans who needed a job. He wrote to every high school in Florida south of Orlando, hoping to find one with a coaching vacancy.

Bill Rutland had just been hired as athletic director at Sarasota High School. Ferreira, who became his first assistant, died Sunday in Fort Myers. He was 83.

During his 11 years at Sarasota High, Ferreria served as head coach in basketball, baseball and track, an assistant in football, director of physical education and, when Rutland left to devote full time to the Sailor Circus, athletic director.

In 1948, national Little League commissioner Carl Stokes asked Ferreira if he would start a Little League program in Sarasota. Only Pensacola and St. Petersburg had Little League programs at the time.

He worked with Chet Ihrig, George Higgins, Bill Dingwell, John Saba, J.T. Pierce and Rutland and also involved the Sarasota Optimist Club in getting the program off the ground.

He found county-owned land at the corner of Tuttle Avenue and 12th Street that would make an ideal Little League park, then pestered county commissioners into granting permission to use it.

By the summer of 1949 there were four Little League teams in Sarasota, two in Venice.

A native of Fernandina Beach, Ferreira was a three-sport star in high school. He played quarterback for Wally Butts at Georgia Military School, then for Shug Jordan at Auburn.

He accepted a coaching job at West Point, Ga., when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in December 1941.

During World War II he served with the 106th Infantry Division and was captured in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. During the two-day march to a POW camp, he suffered frostbite and had the five toes of his left foot amputated by a Polish doctor in Stalag 2A on Feb. 9, 1945.

Complications from the frostbite and imprisonment resulted in the amputation of his left leg just above the knee on Feb. 9, 1976.

He accepted the baseball coaching job at Fort Myers High School in 1956. He was instrumental in starting the Little League programs in Lee, Charlotte, Collier, Hendry, Glades and Okeechobee counties. The Little League complex in Fort Myers is named for him.

He coached baseball at Fort Myers for 19 years and retired in 1976. He has been enshrined in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
