CROWDER CEMETERY BURIALS

Transcribed for Genealogy Trails by K. Torp

This small Cemetery, about four miles north of Mossy Head, Florida, was initiated as a burial ground in 1852 when a Mr. Rogers of Geneva, Alabama, who was gradually making his way to the Bay country, lost a child. The baby boy sickened and died, and was buried close to the temporary living quarters. Subsequently, two acres of land were donated by the Britton Lumber Company, and one acre by the Belser Lumber Company, for a permanent cemetery, the title resting in three trustees: John Wilson Richardson, Jesse Turner, and Clifford Meigs, the latter now deceased.

It takes its name from the Crowder Chapel. The Crowder family formerly lived in the community.

No written records of burials have been kept, hence many without inscriptions are lost to posterity. But in addition to those with markers I have included in the compilation below the names of those who have died within the memory of John Wilson Richardson, a life-long resident of the community, trustee, and who more than anyone else has acted as overseer. Relationships, when known, have been included and the maiden names of the married women have been placed in parenthesis, hoping thereby to make it easier for those concerned with genealogical research.
