Washington County, Florida was created in 1825 and was named after George Washington. At that time, it reached all the way to the Gulf of Mexico and was twice the size of the state of Delaware.
The town of Vernon was named after Washington's home Mt. Vernon and was originally the county seat, deriving its name for George Washington's VA home, Mt. Vernon.
With the arrival of the railroads, Chipley became the county seat in 1927.
